At the request of many hundreds of Johnny's loyal fans and followers, we have been asked to put into one Sun album all of Johnny's train and related songs.
This has been a distinct pleasure to do, as we feel Cash has proven himself to be one of the greatest singers of Country and Folk songs of this or any other generation.
One of his instinctive and intuitional qualities is his love of "train" songs. To Johnny the live and the magic of our heritage is best brought to a climax in us all by the many nostalgic sentiments brought to our minds eye by great romantic tradition of the early era of the train.
Hardship, joy, love, loneliness and adventure are all a part of this romantic age of the "big black wheel". Johnny Cash brings many of these great songs to you in one of his best albums, "BLUE TRAIN". Our hope is that you enjoy it has much as we enjoyed putting it together.

BLUE TRAIN
(Billy H. Smith)
« © '58 Linco Music, BMI »
There's an engine at the station and the whistle blows my name
It's callin' callin' callin' come and get aboard the train
My baby's gone and I'm alone to live in misery
I'm gonna call and make a reservation for me
Gonna ride a blue train gonna ride a blue train
Gonna ride a blue train gonna ride a blue train
I'm gonna climb aboard and ride until I learn to smile
I'll be knockin' out the blues while I'm knockin' out the miles
With my guitar beatin' rhythm to the click-clack of the wheels
I'm gonna sing the blues cause that's the way that I feel
Gonna ride a blue train...
Conductor go and tell the man to shovel on the coal
It doesn't seem as half as bad as long as I can roll
Give me another ticket and I'll stay and ride with you
There's nothin' left to live for in the world we're rollin' through
Gonna ride a blue train...

THERE YOU GO
(Johnny Cash)
« © '56 House Of Cash, BMI »
You're gonna break another heart you're gonna tell another lie
[ guitar ]
Well here I am and there you go you're gone again
I know you're gonna be the way you've always been
Breakin' hearts and tellin' lies is all you know
Another guy gives you the eye and there you go
There you go you're gone again
I should've known I couldn't win
There you go you're by his side
You're gonna break another heart you're gonna tell another lie
[ guitar ]
Because I love you so I take much more than I should take
I want you even though I know my heart is gonna break
You build me up and for a while I'm all aglow
Then your fickle heart sees someone else and there you go
There you go you're gone again...

(Johnny Cash)
« © '56 House Of Cash, BMI »
Train of love's a comin' big black wheels a hummin'
People waitin' at the station happy hearts're drummin'
Train man tell me maybe ain't you got my baby
Ever so of'en ev'rybody's baby gets the urge to roam
But ev'rybody's baby but mine's comin' home
Now stop your whistle blowin' cause I've got ways of knowin'
You're bringin' other people's lovers but my own keeps goin'
Train of love deceivin' when she's not gone she's leavin'
Ever so of'en ev'rybody's baby...
[ guitar ]
Train of love now hasten sweethearts standin' waitin'
Here and there and eve'rywhere there're gonna be embracin'
Train man tell me maybe ain't you got my baby
Ever so of'en ev'rybody's baby...
[ guitar ]
Train of love's a leavin' leavin' my heart grievin'
But early or late I sit and wait because I'm still believin'
We'll walk away together though I may wait forever
Ever so of'en ev'rybody's baby...

(Gene Autry - Johnny Marvin)
« © '40 Western Music, ASCAP »
Goodbye little darlin' we're parting
Parting don't always mean goodbye
Although we have to part you're always in my heart
Goodbye little darlin' goodbye
Goodbye little darlin' I'll miss you
Miss you like the stars would miss the sky
I hate to see you go I'm gonna miss you so
Goodbye little darlin' goodbye
[ guitar ]
Goodbye little darlin' I love you
I'll love you until the day I die
Will you dream a dream of me wherever you may be
Goodbye little darlin' goodbye

(I HEARD THAT) LONESOME WHISTLE
(Hank Williams - Jimmie Davis)
« © '53 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI / Peer International, BMI »
I was ridin' No 9 headin' south from Caroline
I heard that lone-woa-woa-some whistle blow
I got in trouble had to roam I left my gal and left my home
I heard that lone-woa-woa-some whistle blow
Just a kid acting smart I went and broke my darlin's heart
I guess I was too young to know
They took me off the Georgia Main locked me to a ball and chain
I heard that lone-woa-woa-some whistle blow
[ guitar ]
All alone I bear the shame I'm a number not a name
I heard that lone-woa-woa-some whistle blow
All I do is sit and cry when that evenin' train goes by
I heard that lone-woa-woa-some whistle blow
I'll be locked here in this cell till my body's just a shell
And my hair turns whiter than snow
I'll never see that gal of mine I'm in Georgia doin' time
I heard that lone-woa-woa-some whistle blow

COME IN STRANGER
(Johnny Cash)
« © '57 House Of Cash, BMI »
She said come in stranger it's good to have you home
I hurried through cause I knew it was you when I saw your dog waggin' his tail
Honey why didn't you let me know by mail you've been gone so long
She said come in stranger I know you're weary from all the miles
Just sit right there in your easy chair and tell me all about the places you've been
How long it'll be before you leave again I hope it's a long long while
She said come in stranger ev'rything around home is fine
I've watched and I've waited for you to get back and I missed you all the time
[ guitar ]
She said come in stranger oh how I miss you when you're gone
I walk the floor and I watch the door
And when I lie awake and wonder where you can be
I'd give anything to have you here with me I get so lonesome all alone
She said come in stranger and won't you listen to my plea
Stay long enough so that the one I love is not stranger to me

ROCK ISLAND LINE
(Johnny Cash)
« © '57 Hi-Lo Music, BMI »
Now this here's a story about the Rock Island Line
Well the Rock Island Line she runs down into New Orleans
There's a big tollgate down there
And you know if you got certain things on board when you go through the tollgate
Well you don't have to pay the man no toll
Well a train driver he pulled up to the tollgate
And a man hollered and asked him what all he had on board and he said
I got livestock I got livestock I got cows
I got pigs I got sheep I got mules I got all livestock
Well he said you're all right boy you don't have to pay no toll
You can just go right on through so he went on through the tollgate
And as he went through he started pickin' up a little bit of speed
Pickin' up a little bit of steam
He got on through he turned and looked back at the man he said
Well I fooled you I fooled you I got pigiron I got pigiron I got all pigiron
Down the Rock Island Line she's a mighty good road
Rock Island Line it's a road to ride
Rock Island Line it's a mighty good road
Well if you ride you got to ride it like you finally get your ticket
At the station for the Rock Island Line
Oh it's cloudy in the west and it looked like rain
Round the curve come a passenger train
North bound train on the southbound track
He's alright a leavin' but he won't be back
Well the Rock Island Line she's a mighty good road
Rock Island Line it's a road to ride
Rock Island Line it's a mighty good road
Well if you ride you got to ride it like you finally get your ticket
At the station for the Rock Island Line
Oh I may be right and I may be wrong
But you gonna miss me when I'm gone
Well the engineer said before he died
That there were two more drinks that he'd like to try
The conductor said what could they be
A hot cup of coffee and a cold glass of tea
Well the Rock Island Line she's a mighty good road...

GIVE MY LOVE TO ROSE
(Johnny Cash)
« © '57 House Of Cash, BMI »
I found him by the railroad track this mornin'
I could see that he was nearly dead
I knelt down beside him and I listened
Just to hear the words the dyin' fella said
He said they let me out of prison out in Frisco
For ten long years I paid for what I done
I was tryin' to get back to Louisiana
To see my Rose and get to know my son
Give my love to Rose please won't you Mister
Take her all my money tell her buy some pretty clothes
Tell my boy that daddy's so proud of him
And don't forget to give my love to Rose
[ guitar ]
Won't you tell 'em I said thanks for waitin' for me
Tell my boy to help his mom at home
Tell my Rose to try to find another
Cause it ain't right that she should live alone
Mister here's the bag with all my money
It won't last them long the way it goes
God bless you for findin' me this morning
Now don't forget to give my love to Rose
Give my love to Rose please won't you Mister...

HEY PORTER
(Johnny Cash)
« © '55 House Of Cash, BMI »
Hey porter hey porter would you tell me the time
How much longer will it be till we cross that Mason Dixon Line
At daylight would you tell that engineer to slow it down
Or better still just stop the train cause I wanna look around
Hey porter hey porter what time did you say
How much longer will it be till I can see the light of day
When we hit Dixie will you tell that engineer to ring his bell
And ask ev'rybody that ain't asleep to stand right up and yell
[ guitar ]
Hey porter hey porter it's gettin' light outside
This old train is puffin' smoke and I have to strain my eyes
But ask that engineer if he will blow his whistle please
Cause I smell frost on cotton leaves and I feel that southern breeze
Hey porter hey porter please get my bags for me
I need nobody to tell me now that we're in Tennessee
Go tell that engineer to make that lonesome whistle scream
We're not so far from home so take it easy on the steam
[ guitar ]
Hey porter hey porter please open up the door
When they stop this train I'm gonna get off first cause I can't wait no more
Tell that engineer I said thanks a lot and I didn't mind the fare
I'm gonna set my feet on southern soil and breathe that southern air

FOLSOM PRISON BLUES
(Johnny Cash)
« © '55 House Of Cash, BMI »
I hear the train a comin' it's rollin' round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when
I'm stuck in Folsom Prison and time keeps draggin' on
But that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Antone
When I was just a baby my mama told me son
Always be a good boy don't ever play with guns
But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die
When I hear that whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry
[ guitar ]
I bet there's rich folks eatin' in a fancy dinin' car
They're prob'ly drinkin' coffee and smokin' big cigars
Well I know I had it comin' I know I can't be free
But those people keep a movin' and that's what tortures me
[ guitar ]
Well if they freed me from this prison if that railroad train was mine
I bet I'd move it on a little farther down the line
Far from Folsom Prison that's where I want to stay
And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away

WRECK OF THE OLD 97
(Johnny Cash - Bob Johnson - Norman Blake)
« © '57 Unichappell Music, BMI / Slapich Music, BMI »
They gave him his orders at Monroe Virginia
Sayin' Steve you're way behind time
This is not 38 this is old 97 put her into Spencer on time
Well he turned around and said to his big greasy fireman
Hey shovel on a little more coal
And when we cross that White Ol' Mountain watch ol' 97 roll
[ guitar ]
It's a mighty rough road from Lynchburg to Danville
In a line on a three mile grade
It was on that grade that he lost his air brake
You see what a jump we made
He was goin' down the grade makin' 90 miles an hour
His whistle broke into a scream
He was found in the wreck with his hand on the throttle
Scalded to death by the steam
Now all you ladies you better take a warnin'
From this time on and learn
Never speak harsh words to your true lover husband
He may leave you and never return

SO DOGGONE LONESOME
(Johnny Cash)
« © '55 House Of Cash, BMI »
I do my best to hide this lowdown feelin'
I try to make believe there's nothin' wrong
But they're always askin' me about you darlin'
And it hurts me so to tell 'em that you're gone
If they ask me I guess I'd be denyin' that I've been unhappy all alone
But if they heard my heart they'd hear it cryin'
Where's my darlin' when's she comin' home
I ask myself a million times what's right for me to do
To try to lose my blues alone or hang around for you
Well I make it pretty good until that moon comes shinin' through
And that I get so doggone lonesome
[ guitar ]
Time stands still when you're a waitin' sometimes I think my heart is stoppin' too
One lonely hour seems forever sixty minutes more to wait for you
But I guess I'll keep waitin' till you're with me cause I believe that lovin' you is right
But I don't care if the sun don't rise tomorrow if I can't have you with me tonight
Well I know I'll keep on lovin' you cause true love can't be killed
I oughta get you off of my mind but I guess I never will
I could have a dozen others but I know I'd love you still
Cause I get so doggone lonesome
