Following the success of Jim Ed Brown's biggest solo hit, "Morning," in 1970, he entered the Top 15 again a few months later with "Angel's Sunday," which brandishes a surprising vocal rhythm as a hook. Brown's albums are usually good, but Angel's Sunday is a little better than average thanks to the strong material and predominantly female background vocals, which re-create in spots the sound of his former trio, the Browns. Production touches add variety to what is mostly a platter of ballads, such as the Spanish guitar on "Four Seasons of Life," but the songs overall are so melodic that they require little more than Brown's honeyed voice to put them across.

LONGEST BEER OF THE NIGHT
(Carson C. Parks)
« © '67 Greenwood Music, BMI »

This is the longest beer of the night but in the east I think I see some light
And then pretty soon I know the sun will shine
I know a bar that opens promptly at nine at nine
I guess two six packs wasn't enough
Cause right about now the goin' really gets rough
Yeah and some early bird is happy calling its mate
And I wish I knew a bar that opens door so promptly at eight
Maybe I was just a fool thinking I could drown you out of my mind
But the longest part of the day is just before nine before nine
I can see the dew that settle on the ground ha ha ha
And if I'm not careful your mem'ry's gonna come around
And that's the reason that I just gotta stay tight
So I'm just nursin' the longest beer of the night
I'm just nursin' the longest beer of the night

HONKY TONK MAN
(Johnny Horton - Tillman Franks - Howard Hausey)
« © '56 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »

I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop
I love to give the girls a whirl to the music of an old jukebox
But when my money's all gone I'm on the telephone
Callin' hey hey mama can your daddy come home

I'm living fast and dangerously but I've got plenty of company
When the moon comes up and the sun goes down
That's when I wanna see the lights of town
Cause I'm a honky tonk man...
[ steel - harmonica ]
It takes a pretty little gal and a jug of wine
That's what it takes to make a honky tonk mind
With the jukebox a whinin' honky tonk sound that's when I wanna lay my money down
Cause I'm a honky tonk man...

WAR IS HELL
(Hugh X. Lewis - Bill Floyd)
« © '68 Johnny Bienstock Music, BMI »

Our baby surely got his mama's temper the morning silence breaks he must be fed
He's happy now cause I don't hear one whipper as you slide back beside me in our bed
My arms reach to cage your body tigtly my lips survey you warm and velvet skin
Ten thousand miles to you I retreat nigthly while my mind's playing tricks on me again
My mind's been caught day dreaming AWOL
The enemy is screaming another body fell war is hell
[ ac.guitar ]
I must remember I've been trained for killing and that's the only way I can survive
If my luck holds out and my God is willing tomorrow morning I'll still be alive
My mind's been caught day dreaming AWOL...
War is hell war is hell war is hell

MORNING AFTER
(Lawrence Brown - Raymond Bloodworth)
« © '66 Longitude Music, BMI »

Oh Mr Sun peekin' through the shade in my room
He says get up gotta rise and shine through my gloom
I better face myself gtotta brace myself to go on
The morning after all the laughter has gone
I lived my life waiting for the nightfall to come
Then I got out on a constant search for someone
Now I may hold her hand kiss her lips well it'd be fun yeah
The morning after all the laughter has gone
Who's hand was I holding so tight and who's lips was I kissing last night
A single bed where I wake alone every morn
Sometimes I cry and wonder why I was born
I better face myself brace myself to go on
The morning after all the laughter has gone
The morning after all the laughter has gone

SITTIN' ON THE DOCK OF THE BAY
(Otis Redding - Steve Cropper)
« © '68 Irving Music, BMI »

Sittin' in the morning sun sittin' I'll be sittin' when the evening comes
Watchin' the ships roll in then I watch 'em roll away again
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay watchin' the tide roll away
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time
I left my home down in Georgia headed for the Frisco Bay
I've had nothing to live for looks like nothing's gonna come my way
I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay watchin' the tide roll away
Sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time
Looks like nothing's ever change everything still remains the same
I can't do what them people tell me to do so I guess I'll remain the same
Sittin' here restin' my bones and this loneliness won't leave me alone
Yes two thousand miles I roamed just too make this dock my home
Now I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay watchin' the tide roll away
Yes I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time

WHAT'S A GIRL LIKE YOU (DOING IN A PLACE LIKE THIS)
(Jim Ed Brown - Donnie Fritz)
« © '68 Court Of Kings »

What's a girl like you doing in a place like this
Oh what a pretty face in such a dirty place what in the world are you doing here
You try to act like you belong but I know you're just puttin' on
What's a girl like you doing in a place like this
What's a girl like you wasting your time for
In a place that only brings disgrace and shame
What's a girl like you wasting your life for what went wrong who is to blame
You play the jukebox all night long you try to act like you belong
But your eyes tell me you're a million miles away
So if I ask just once again it's because I don't understand
What's a girl like you doing in a place like this
What's a girl like you doing in a place like this

MY FRIEND THE BOTTLE MY FRIEND THE GLASS
(Liz Anderson - Louise Mayer)
« © '68 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

I found new friends the day you left me you never told me you'd be back
New friends so kind to one so lonely my friend the bottle my friend the glass
They kept me going when I had to go take you back I wish you wouldn't ask
They now mean more to me than you do my friend the bottle my friend the glass
To ease my mind they give me blindness so I can see into the past
Sometimes I think they're killing me with kindness
My frind the bottle my friend the glass
[ guitar ]
While you were gone I learned to need them give them up that's just too much to ask
By now you too might like to meet them my friend the bottle my friend the glass
My frind the bottle my friend the glass

ENEMY
(Johnny Adcock)
« © '68 Careers Music, BMI »

The work day's done it's time to go home
It's time to make decisions I must make alone
For there's a battlefield between my home and me
And I must pass directly by the enemy
There's flashing lights straight ahead
The neon signs of the barrooms turn the sky blood red
I search for strenght inside of me I'm passing through the homeland of the enemy
Like a dreaming man I'm in an open door
Then all the painted faces remind me I'm at war
I turn to leave and tremble when I see the waiting patient eyes of the enemy
Their eyes shine bright they strike me blind
It's too late to run away surrenders on my mind
There's tears at home by now she's missing me
She'll know I'm in the arms of the enemy

BUMMIN' AROUND
(Pete Graves)
« © '53 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

I've got an old slauch hat got my roll on my shoulder
I'm as free as the breeze I'll do as I please just a bummin' around
I've got a million friends I don't feel any older
I've got nothing to lose not even the blues just a bummin' around
Whenever worries start to bothering me
I grab my coat my old slauch hat hit the trail again you see
I ain't got a dime don't care where I'm going
I'm as free as the breeze I'll do as I please just a bummin' around
[ steel - guitar ]
Just a bummin' around
Whenever worries start to bothering me...
Just a bummin' around

Dance dance dance little stripper dance while the music's hot

She kicks off her shoes when she feels the blues the Cajun Stripper blues

SMALLER THAN THE BOTTLE
(Dalton Roberts - Audrey Mae Sims)
« © '68 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

I used to be a big man in this town
Anyone can tell you I was known for miles around
I had money a family and a home so fine
Now I'm smaller than the bottle and weaker than the wine
I'm just a shell of the man I used to be I drown my hopes but not my memories
I've lost everything I owned and I'm sure to lose my mind
I'm smaller than the bottle and weaker than the wine
[ guitar ]
I haven't seen my children in a year or more
They wouldn't recognize me if I'd walk up to the door
Fot I can't go there when I'm drinking and that's all the time
I'm smaller than the bottle and weaker than the wine
I'm just a shell of the man...
I'm smaller than the bottle and weaker than the wine
