She's Leavin' is from Jim Ed Brown's solo period between the end of the Browns and the beginning of his successful partnership with Helen Cornelius. The title track, which borrows the "Auld Lang Syne" gimmick from the G-Clefs' 1961 hit "I Understand (Just How You Feel)," barely cracked the country Top 40 in 1971. The leadoff track, "Summerset," is a wistful beauty that should have been a hit and stands out as the album's highlight. The remainder is given over to love ballads old and new, from Cindy Walker's classic "Not As a Sweetheart (But Just As a Friend)" to Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night." Reinforcing the album's contemporary vibe, two songs come from Kristofferson's pen, and Freddie Hart's "Easy Lovin'" — which must have been recorded while it was still on the charts — closes the set. One might wish for more original material, but Brown has a beautiful voice that seldom disappoints.

SUMMERSET
(Kevin Johnson)

Summer headed south in sixty-four found me there in my beat up car
My soul possessions came to nothing more than my traveling bags and my old guitar
Wine and pretty women were the life of me the devil rode along for my company
Picking and singing I did the rounds of a score of southern country towns
I came to Summerset when summer leaves were turning yellow
Summer songs had all been sung by fellows such as I
I came to Summerset to sow the seeds of wild dependent
The people there came up to stare and watch me passin' by

It was in the chill of that early autumn the breathless still of the afternoon
When I felt to sudden strange contentment lyin' there in Matilda's room
Matilda's arms were warm and willing Matilda's arms were mine to share
Seems they found the need within they never even knew was there
I came to Summerset when summer leaves were turning yellow
Summer songs had all been sung by fellows such as I
I came to Summerset to sow the seeds of wild dependent
The people seemed to understand and watch me passin' by
[ steel ]
Some people say he's like his mother other people say he's got my ways
Seems kinda quiet around there since he started to school the other day
I came to Summerset...
I came to Summerset...

NOT AS A SWEETHEART (BUT JUST AS A FRIEND)
(Cindy Walker)
« © '71 Sixteen Stars Music, BMI »

Please don't hang up on me for I just call to say
That I'm leaveing and I won't be back again
And ask you if you'd see me and be with me one more time
Not as a sweetheart but just as a friend
Not as a sweetheart for I know your love is gone for me
But just for the old time sake leave me a memory do this for me
And please would you take my hand and just kiss me once again
Not as a sweetheart but just as a friend
Well thanks darling anyway no you can't break your date
And plans can't wait and broken hearts can'r mend
So bye bye be a sweet girl and think of me sometime
Not as a sweetheart but just as a friend
Not as a sweetheart for I know your love is gone for me
But just for the sake of my aching heart say something sweet to me for I used to be
Your one and your only love and it hurts to see it end
Not as a sweetheart but just as your friend
Not as a sweetheart but just as your friend

WILL I EVER STOP LOVING YOU
(Jean Chapel - Alda Calogne)
« © '71 Blind Squirrel Music, BMI »

Will I ever stop loving you
Will I ever stop reaching into empty space to recapture the dream we once knew
Will I ever stop trying to forget your face will I ever stop loving you
Does this long endless road in my life have an end or must I go on stumbling through
Is the valley of forgetfulness round the bend will I ever stop loving you

Will I ever stop running away from myself like fools that love too much will do
In search of your likeness and somebody new will I ever stop loving you
Does this long endless road...
Will I ever stop loving you

LOVE IS WORTH THE TRYIN'
(Chuck Rogers)
« © '71 Ensign Music, BMI »

I met her as night was leaving so the sun could shine
She smiled at me and I could see the cobwebs in her mind
Since she was running from herself she had no place to go
We spent the whole day talking and watchin' flowers grow
I learned that she had been in love a dozen times or so
The more she tried to understand the less she seemed to know
Looks like love can hardly bloom before it starts to dyin'
Makes a body wonder if love is worth the tryin'
Then midnight whispered man and woman you both outcome your needs
And so you share the warmness there beneath the tangle sheets
And just before she fell asleep I heard her softly sighin'
Thank you for reminding me that love is worth the tryin'
Thank you for reminding me that love is worth the tryin'

HELP ME MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT
(Kris Kristofferson)
« © '70 Combine Music, BMI »

Take the ribbon from your hair shake it loose and let it fall
Laying soft against my skin like the shadows on the wall
Come and lay down by my side till the early morning light
All I'm taking is your time help me make it through the night
I don't care what's right or wrong I won't try to understand
Let the devil take tomorrow Lord tonight I need a friend
Yesterday is dead and gone and tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone help me make it through the night
[ steel + guitar ]
I don't wanna be alone help me make it through the night
Oh it's sad to be alone help me make it through the night

SHE'S LEAVIN' (BONNIE PLEASE DON'T GO)
(Kevin Johnson)
« © '71 Tree Publishing, BMI »

She's leavin' she's leavin' she's on the ship now and leavin'
Standing by the gateway tossin' streamers over my way I find it kinda hard believin'
Deceivin' deceivin' my subtle game of deceivin'
Standing here and waving blowin' kisses and behavin'
Like it doesn't matter much to see her leavin'

I don't know what I don't know who I don't know where she's goin' to
I only know she's goin' out of my life
Across the sea a wavin' hands and Col'nel Billy's farewell band
I watch the disappearin' face of my wife
And I'm doin' all I can to hide the sad confusion in my mind
And brace myself with every trick I know
And though my lips are beating time to the words of Auld Lang Syne
My voice keeps on defyin' cryin' Bonnie please don't go

Oh that fool in me persuadin' me to hide the broken pieces of my dignity
When a simple reassuring word just to reach out and comfort her
Was all I had to say to keep her here with me
And I don't know what I don't know where I don't know who she's goin' to...
She's leavin' she's leavin'...

I WON'T MENTION IT AGAIN
(Cam Mullins)
« © '71 Seaview Music, BMI »

I know you're tired of being all I ever wanted
You no longer feel the love I have for you
What happens now what will I do with all the mem'ries
And the dreams of all the things we'll never do
But I won't mention it again I won't think about tomorrow
Just let it happen live each hour day by day
But let me tell you before you go how much I love you
Then I won't mention it again I won't mention it again

I feel my life has reached an early sign of autumn
In my heart the leaves are falling love is cold
And everything that once was warm and new is gone now
Leaving nothing but this hunger in my soul
But I won't mention it again...

I'D RATHER BE SORRY
(Kris Kristofferson)
« © '71 Careers Music, BMI »

If you hurt me you won't be the first or the last in a lifetime of many mistakes
But I won't spend tomorrow regreting the past for the chances that I didn't take
Cause I'll never know till it's over if I'm right or I'm wrong loving you
But I'd rather be sorry for something I've done than for something that I didn't do

When you touch me it's easy to make me believe tomorrow won't take you away
But I'll gamble whatever tomorrow might bring for the love that I'm living today
Cause I'll never know...

YOU NEVER SAID YOU LOVED ME
(Johnny Russell - Tommy Russell)
« © '71 Sure-Fire Music, BMI »

I said I love you in a moment of ecstasy
You wrapped your lonely arms around me so willingly
In that mistic transe of madness I can see the world of sadness
Cause you never no you never said you loved me
Before I go would you share with me a glass of wine
Would you whisper sweet and low there'll be another time
The seeds of love have now been planted why did you take my love for granted
And you never no you never said you loved me
I can't conceal my emotions when you love me the way that you do
In a moment of extasy it's so easy to say I love you
If one little lie will hurt you then say goodbye and forget me
Cause you never no you never said you loved me

« © '70 Tree Publishing, BMI »

Easy lovin' so sexy lookin' I know from the feelin' that it comes from the heart
Easy lovin' everyday's things givin'
To count all my blessings I wouldn't know where to start
Everytime I look you over so real to life it seems
Upon your pretty shoulders there's a pair of angel wings
Easy lovin' seeing is believin' life with you's like livin' in a beautiful dream
