CITY CRIES AT NIGHT
(Eddie Miller)
« © '70 Roschelle Publishing, BMI »
Have you ever stopped and listened at the way that a city sheds its tears
At the streams of the junky who needs nothing more than just a needle by
I can smell a grass a burnin' some fool next door wants to charge his mind
These apartment walls are thin and the sound just walks right in
Tells me how the city cries at night
Some drunk he stumbles from the curb and mumbles and he tries to hail a cab
Some woman runs out from a bar a shoutin' that her lover's in a fight
That old meet wagon's rollin' I guess somebody's either heard her died
The corner preacher just begins to tell us all about our sins
That's another way the city cries at night
I hear a sirene whinin' and that sound don't help to lift a lonely soul
I smell the wrapper burnin' two cats are draggin' out from light to light
Some wino walks along the curb and drinks his empty bottle in the street
These apartment walls are thin and the sound just walks right in
Tells me how the city cries at night
The jet eats up the runway as it moans and groans and reaches for the blue
My baby rides her wings she's got a lovin' with some swinging disco guy
She left her screamin' heart behind when her lips made the sound of goodbye
The walls of my heart are thin and the hurt it just walks right in
Tells me how the city cries at night
The walls of my heart are thin and the hurt it just walks right in
Tells me how the city cries at night

BUT I WON'T
(Paul Evans - Paul Parnes)
« © '70 De Shufflin Inc, ASCAP / Port Music, ASCAP »
Out of words to say I turned and walked away
Told her not to worry I'd be back another day but I won't
When she sees we're through I know what she'll do
She'll learn to forget me and she'll find somebody new but I won't
I've loved some but she was my only lover I pray I don't hurt her too much
My heart is through but my mind is over
And I can't help this longing for another woman's touch
Mhm time will help erase the tears from her sweet face
If I do the thing I should and clear out of this place but I won't
Mhm know you's foolin' I won't
[ whistle ]
But I won't mhm no I won't

LIFT RING PULL OPEN
(Joe Cooper - John Gallie)
« © '70 Criterion Music, ASCAP »
There are four words that I printed on most every can of beer
Four words that I live by since my baby's gone away from here
I've sampled all the different friends from every brewery
And found one that goes down just right and soothes my sorrow to a tea
Lift ring pull open it's all spelled out for you
Nothing could be more easy it's something any fool can do
Lift ring pull open and have a drink with me
As I try to forget I'm a loser and drown my misery
Yes sometimes life seems so useless still there are things to look forward to
A little music from a jukebox and a cool refreshing brew
A friendly game of poker with stakes that are too high
Such things will help me pass the time until the day I die
Lift ring pull open that's all you have to do
Nothing could be more easy it's something any fool can do
Lift ring pull open and tip a can with me
As I try to forget I'm a loser and escape this misery
Lift ring pull open don't even need a key
I'll just pop a top and drink to the last drop and drown my misery

BABY AGAIN
(Billy Ed Wheeler)
« © '69 U Catalog, ASCAP »
She didn't warn me the way she said she would she didn't say goodbye
I'd like to cheer my aching heart if I could I'd like to know the reason why
What part of my life she couldn't buy but I'll have a drink and then I'll cry
So put a nipple on my bottle bartender warm my whiskey and be a baby's frined
A baby can't cry and tonight when I get high I'm gonna be a baby again
Go ahead and laugh at me if you want to my friend I'm in misery
This second child who won't cause my pain to end
And I suppose that child could see that it won't bring her back to me
But it might help to some degree
So put a nipple on my bottle bartender warm my whiskey and be a baby's frined...

FOLK SINGER
(Merle Kilgore)
« © '64 Painted Desert Music, BMI »
He used to sing his song to his Sara Jane the folk singer
His songs filled with love made the mountains ring the folk singer
At first Sara Jane was to be his bride but as his fame grew she was pushed aside
Sweet mountain girl would say goodbye to the folk singer
He let his hair grow long and he dressed in style the folk singer
His voice was pure and the fans went wild for the folk singer
He said Sara Jane was much too plain so he left her alone as he gained more fame
But sorrow will come like the mountain rain to the folk singer
[ harmonica ]
Lavished in glory fortune at his feet the folk singer
Awoke one morning and he couldn't speak the folk singer
The doctors said his singing days were through thousands wept Sara Jane did too
He couldn't sing now his friends were few the folk singer
Sick at heart in the mountains again the folk singer
Now Sara Jane didn't look so plain to the folk singer
Ah the power of love can do strange things cause love has made him sing again
Only now he sings for his Sara Jane the folk singer
And once again the mountains ring for this folk singer oh the folk singer

CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE
(Jean Chapel)
« © '70 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
You were there when he was the same place the same night
I believe them because description fit you right
They said the tall vicious blonde with eyes like stars of blue
Kissed his lips and laughed at nothing just the way you do
They went on to say you fit in his arms like a glove
That positive identity was you and your old love
With tearful eyes you said to me you leave the incidence
And I put you away with circumstantial evidence
[ steel ]
I guess I'll always wonder how many souls have paid
As witness after witness prove steps they've never made
Try convicted and condemn for crimes they didn't do
Your old love still cared enough to take the stand for you
He's the only one that came around in your behalf
Enough alike to be your twin was his wife's photograph
Now the words ring loud and clear newly the incidence
Oh and it's lonely here with circumstantial evidence

WICKED WOMAN'S LOVE
(Buddy Mize)
« © '70 Central Songs, BMI »
I had a home and family in Missouri had a job any man would be proud of
But I lost it all and here I am in Georgia crawlin' out to a wicked woman's love
She lured me from all the things I treasured to dingy bars with forbid rooms above
My mind may not close out the shame I've cost crawlin' out to a wicked woman's love
The devil surely got me now hasn't he I've lost control of every bone inside of me
I think I should go home but I'm not strong enough
And I've gotta have this wicked woman's love
And I've gotta have this wicked woman's love

SUNDAY IN THE COUNTRY
(Fred Crane)
« © '70 Royce McAfee Music, BMI »
When it's Sunday in the country that's a special kind of day
A time for playin' lazy in the sun it's so nice to know the work's all done
The church bells invitation seems to warm the whole creation
That the parson's congregation I'd be none if we all start playin' lazy in the sun
After the meetin' what a feast will be eaten
Everyone from grandpa down to liitle Faye
Eats fried chicken and hot biscuits by the tray
Sunday dinner in the country is that way
While the women clean the kitchen all the men start to horseshoe pitchin'
While the young men stand round itchin' for a try
Then we'll all eat some of grandma's pie as Sunday in the country passes by
When the day begins to mellow and the moon is cornstock yellow
Every gal expects her fellow to come by
They'll go courtin' while the moon is high as Sunday in the country passes by

I'VE JUST BEEN WASTING MY TIME
(Jerry Foster - Bill Rice)
« © '68 PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
I've never been to China town never seen Frisco Bay
Ain't been to Dallas in the spring ain't got no pictures in my mind
I've spend the best years of my life here with you I've just been wasting my time
[ dobro ]
I've never owned a suit of clothes just barely could afford your ring
We got married awfully young just to live took every dime
It hurts to think that after all I've done for you I've just been wasting my time
[ dobro ]
No telling what I might have been had your love not tied me down
You don't say you want to leave I know you do for I'm not blind
Any fool can see that you don't love me I've just been wasting my time
[ dobro ]
I've done by you as best I could there's nothing else that I can do
Don't stay around because of me don't want you messin' up my mind
The best of me wasn't good enough for you I've just been wasting my time
