The studio formula that melded vocalist Ronnie Dunn with Kix Brooks is still in effect on cuts like "Your Love Don't Take a Backseat to Nothing" and a duet with country-pop diva Reba McEntire ("If You See Him/If You See Her"); there are some good moments here. Dunn's cover of Roger Miller's "Husbands and Wives" displays his abilities nicely, while Brooks comes to life as a rock & roller on "Way Gone." Also good are "Brand New Whiskey" and "Born and Raised in Black and White." However, the final cut, a gospel-kissed tune ("You're My Angel") that shows just how strong Dunn's voice is, evokes the most emotion. Dunn, when allowed to free himself from trite material and heavy production practices, is amazing.

HOW LONG GONE
(Shawn Camp - John Scott Sherrill)
« © '98 Nothing But The Wolf Music, BMI »
I keep thinkin' any minute you'll be comin' home honey
I ain't seen nothin' of you in a month of Sundays
Tell me how long gone are you gonna be
All you said was you had to get goin' oh but baby I wouldn't mind knowin'
Just how long gone are you gonna be
How am I supposed to make any plans when I still don't even understand
If you're ever gonna come back home to me
Tell me please how long gone are you gonna be
Maybe I didn't pay enough attention but I do believe you forgot to mention
Just how long gone are you gonna be
The phone ain't ringin' cause you still ain't callin'
I ain't been hearin' your footsteps fallin'
Tell me how long gone are you gonna be
How am I supposed to make any plans...
[ guitar ]
Yeah how am I supposed to make any plans...
Tell me how long gone are you gonna be

I CAN'T GET OVER YOU
(Terry McBride - Ronnie Dunn)
« © '98 Constant Pressure Publishing, BMI »
I forget where I'm goin' in my own house I got myself in this I'll get myself out
I talk out loud at the top of my voice I sing
Whoa keep the faith see what tomorrow brings
I can't get over you try as I may oh it's no use
My heart just can't leave you alone my mind won't believe you're gone
I can't get over you
I got a front row seat here to a fool's masquerade
And that fool in the mirror keeps sayin' I'm doin' OK
I stare at that door that you walked out it hits me hard and leaves no doubt
That I can't get over you...
[ guitar ]
I can't get over you...
Can't get over you I can't get over you

SOUTH OF SANTA FE
(Lary Boone - Paul Nelson - Kix Brooks)
« © '98 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Where the rain don't fall and the grass don't grow the older part of New Mexico
I drifted into town one day and stumbled in on a lost cafe
Shades were pulled and the door was locked something made me knock
Time stood still when she opened the door I didn't know where I was anymore
And we were lost in each other's eyes where loneliness meets paradise
Something in my heart broke free blowing wild as the tumbleweed
Somewhere north of heaven where eagles fear to fly
The sun burns hot as the devil's gate the desert meets the sky
Tattooed on my mem'ry is the image of an angel's face
North of heaven south of Santa Fe
Bad news tends to travel fast I was running from my past
I left her when the morning broke truth is I never let her go
I'm still running free but in my heart I'll always be
Somewhere north of heaven...
North of heaven south of Santa Fe

IF YOU SEE HIM IF YOU SEE HER
(Terry McBride - Tommy Lee James - Jennifer Kimball)
« © '98 Constant Pressure Publishing, BMI »
[ with Reba McEntire ]
If you see him tell him I wish him well
How am I doing well sometimes it's hard to tell
I still miss him more than ever but please don't say a word
If you see him oh if you see him
If you see her tell her I'm doing fine
And if you want to say that I think of her from time to time
Ask her if she ever wonders where we both went wrong
If you see her if you see her
Oh I still want her and I still need him so
Oh I don't know why we let each other go
[ guitar ]
If you see her tell her the light's still on for her
Nothing's changed deep down the fire still burns for him
And even if it takes forever say I'll still be here
If you see him if you see her if you see him if you see her

BRAND NEW WHISKEY
(Gary Stewart - Mary Lou Stewart)
« © '88 Blue Day Music, BMI »
Yeah they oughta make a brand new whiskey and give it a woman's name
A man needs something to hold onto when a goodbye hits him like a hurricane
Make it sweet as sweet as her lips intoxicating as her kiss
Something special like champagne
Yeah they oughta make a brand new whiskey and give it a woman's name
Leaving's the reason I'm drinking oh I've never felt so alone
Night and day I stay stoned hoping to forget she's gone
I never thought she'd do me so dirty together forever she promised me
She took her promise and left a memory the day that woman walked out on me
Yeah they oughta make a brand new whiskey...
[ guitar - steel ]
Yeah they oughta make a brand new whiskey...
Yeah they oughta make a brand new whiskey and give it a woman's name

BORN AND RAISED IN BLACK AND WHITE
(Don Cook - John B. Jarvis)
« © '90 Peer Music, BMI »
The wind blows hard across the Texas plains makes some people go insane
While others quietly pray for rain that's where we came from
Two boys playing in the burning sun one with books and one with guns
Mama calls but just one comes the other runs
With a Christian sense of wrong and right we were born and raised in black and white
One learned to pray one loved to fight we were born and raised in black and white
Brother took to the gospel road spent his whole life savin' souls
He looked at me his blood ran cold he didn't even try
I've had no dreams and had no plans but a gun felt good in my right hand
The warden said how come you killed that man I said I don't know why
Welcome home said the hot moonlight we're born and raised in black and white
One lives to pray one waits to die we were born and raised in black and white
We were born and raised in black and white
[ guitar ]
Someone handed me a cigarette they offered me my last request
I asked my mortal soul be blessed by someone close to me
I came to him with trembling hands I swore I'd never understand
He said it's just what life had planned it's destiny
So don't waste your tears on me tonight we were born and raised in black and white
You chase the dark I chase the light we were born and raised in black and white
We were born and raised in black and white
The wind blows hard across the Texas plains makes some people go insane
While others quietly pray for rain

YOUR LOVE DON'T TAKE A BACKSEAT TO NOTHING
(Terry McBride - Ronnie Dunn - Kix Brooks)
« © '98 Buffalo Prairie Songs, BMI »
I get down with music and guitars I fool around with all kinds of fast cars
It takes you baby to keep my motor running
I smoke the tires and watch the rubber burn
It takes your fire to make my wheels turn
Makes my blood run hot and keeps my heart a humming
But your love don't take a backseat to nothing
Temptation always knocking get thee behind me cause I ain't stopping
Baby you're all I need and whole lot more
Rockin' and rollin' out here on the fast lane it can get crazy downright insane
Got me burning down the highway to your front door
But your love don't take a backseat to nothing
My baby's really something she keeps my motor running
Her love don't take a backseat to nothing
[ guitar ]
But your love don't take a backseat to nothing
Temptation always knocking get thee behind me cause I ain't stopping
Baby you're all I need and whole lot more
But your love don't take a backseat to nothing
But your love don't take a backseat to nothing

HUSBANDS AND WIVES
(Roger Miller)
« © '66 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Two broken hearts lonely looking like houses where nobody lives
Two people each having so much pride inside neither side forgives
The angry words spoken in haste such a waste of two lives
It's my belief pride is the chief cause and a decline
In the number of husbands and wives
A woman and a man a man and a woman some can and some can't and some can't
[ mandolin ]
Oh two broken hearts lonely looking like...
Yeah it's my belief pride...

WAY GONE
(Bob DiPiero - Kix Brooks)
« © '98 Buffalo Prairie Songs, BMI »
Way gone for my sweet baby so strong and I don't mean maybe
If I'm wrong then I don't know nothing cause I'm way gone for her sweet loving
Way gone she's my one and only so long to sad and lonely
She waltzed into my world now I'm way gone for my sweet girl
[ guitar ]
Oh and if I'm half the man my sweet baby thinks I am
I guess I better pack my bags cause I don't plan on coming back
Way gone and I've crossed over I'm lucky as a four leaf clover
I don't want nobody to save me cause I'm way gone for my sweet baby
[ steel - fiddle ]
Oh and if I'm half the man my sweet baby thinks I am
I guess I better pack my bags cause I don't plan on coming back
Way gone she's a one way ticket rock on gonna get down with it
Sweet lips and brunette curls yes I'm way gone for my sweet girl
Way gone for my sweet baby so strong and I don't mean maybe
If I'm wrong then I don't know nothing cause I'm way gone for her sweet loving
Yeah way gone for my sweet baby...

WHEN LOVE DIES
(Kent M. Robbins - Chuck Cannon )
« © '98 Irving Music, BMI »
Love conquers all and someday it'll conquer you
There's nothing finer than falling all in it when love is true
But once it goes out and breaks your heart it still ain't history
When love dies it don't rest in peace
You can lock your doors and windows to keep the pain at bay
Yesterday may be dead and gone but the past won't go away
It's waitin' right around every corner with a heartache you don't need
When love dies it don't rest in peace
Oh when love dies you can't bury those memories
Oh when love dies it disappears but it never leaves
When love dies it don't rest in peace
[ fiddle ]
How does love die then come back a ghost rattling chains
It keeps on hauntin' my broken heart driving me insane
I hear it whisper my name in the night just like it still lives and breathes
When love dies it don't rest in peace
Oh when love dies...
When love dies it don't rest in peace
When love dies it don't rest in peace
When love dies it don't rest in peace

YOU'RE MY ANGEL
(Michael Smotherman - Greg Humphrey)
« © '97 Bud Dog Music, ASCAP »
You're my angel you see me through believe in me I believe in you
Oh fill my heart from you're loving well you're my angel
Pick me up when I'm feeling down when I stumble on shaky ground
Oh you're my answer when I can't tell you're my angel
Oh you take me up to heaven when you spread your loving wings
When I am weary and way behind when I am clearly out of my mind
Oh when I find I'm in my own hell you're my angel
Oh you're my angel
