Pat Boone's Stardust arrived on the heels of seven consecutive million-selling singles in mid-1958, a year in which no less than eight of his songs would hit the Top 40. The album itself did nothing to alter Boone's position as a top teen idol, second only to Elvis. But it did remove any vestige of doubt as to who was America's singer of popular songs with the broadest appeal. That matter, though, was likely settled a few months earlier when he edged out Elvis as favorite male singer of 1957. But if further proof was needed, Stardust's overwhelming success provided it. The album rose to number two on the charts and stayed in the Top 40 for 32 weeks. It is the quintessential Pat Boone vocal performance, and it absolutely established him as one of the great ballad singers of our time. Every track is top-notch, and if it doesn't represent yet his most finely finished musical package, it is definitely his most easily appreciated work as a singer. No Boone album would match its commercial success.
Boone's voice is strong and crystal-clear, and his confident but never overstated delivery turns a batch of fine standards into pure gems as it brings back the special joy of simply sitting down, listening, and losing oneself in the music. Just two of the 14 tracks are proffered non-ballad style. "Little White Lies" is done in Boone's good-natured uptempo way, and "St. Louis Blues" breaks the album's mood with its strong rock-style exuberance. It just may have been planted wisely near the album's end in order to break the music's sweet spell and put us back on our feet. For any Pat Boone doubters, this is the album.

STAR DUST

June/1958
Produced by Randy Wood

Arranged and conducted by Billy Vaughn

STARDUST
(Mitchell Parish - Hoagy Carmichael)
« © '57 Mills Music, ASCAP / Songs Of Peer, ASCAP »
Sometimes I wonder why I spend the lonely night
Dreaming of a song the melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When your love was new and each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song
Beside a garden wall when stars are bright you are in my arms
The nightingale tells his tales of paradiise where roses grew
Though I dream in vain in my heart it will remain
My stardust melody the memory of love's refrain
[ clarinet ]
Though I dream in vain in my heart it will remain
My stardust melody the memory of love's refrain

DEEP PURPLE
(Mitchell Parish - Peter DeRose)
« © '52 Robbins Catalog, ASCAP / De Rose Music, ASCAP »
When my deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to flicker in the sky
Through the mist of a memory you wander back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh
In the still of the night once again I hold you tight
Though you're gone your love lives on when moonlight beams
And as long as my heart will beat lover we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
[ strings ]
And as long as my heart will beat...

AUTUMN LEAVES
(Johnny Mercer - Joseph Kozma - Jacques Prevert)
« © '47 Morley Music, ASCAP »
The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
[ strings - trumpet ]
But I miss I miss you you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

SEPTEMBER SONG
(Maxwell Anderson - Kurt Weill)
« © '38 Chappell & Co, ASCAP »
Oh it's a long long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time for the waiting game
Oh the days dwindle down to a precious few
September November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you
Oh the days dwindle down...

I'LL WALK ALONE
(Sammy Cahn - Jule Styne)
« © '57 Cahn Music, ASCAP / Morley Music, ASCAP »
I'll walk alone because to tell you the truth I'll be lonely
I don't mind being lonely when my heart tells me you are lonely too
I'll walk alone they'll ask me why and I'll tell them I'd rather
There are dreams I must gather
Dreams we fashioned the night you held me tight
I'll always be near you wherever you are each night
In every prayer if you'll call I'll hear you no matter how far
Just close your eyes and I'll be there
Please walk along and send your love and your kisses to guide me
Till you're walking beside I'll walk alone (I'll walk alone)

EBB TIDE
(Carl Sigman - Robert Maxwell)
« © '53 Robbins Catalog, ASCAP »
First the tide rushes in plants a kiss on the shore
Then rolls out to sea and the sea is very still once more
So I rush to your side like the on coming tide
With one burning thought will your arms open wide
At last we're face to face and as we kiss through an embrace
I can tell I can feel you are love you are real really mine
In the rain in the dark in the sun
Like the tide at its ebb I'm at peace in the web of your arms

TO EACH HIS OWN
(Jay Livingston - Ray Evans)
« © '46 Paramount Music, ASCAP »
A rose must remain with the sun and the rain
Or its lovely promise won't come true
To each his own to each his own and my own is you
What good is a song if the words just don't belong
And a dream must be a dream for two
No good alone to each his own for me there's you
If a flame is to grow there must be a glow
To open each door there's a key
I need you I know I can't let you go
Your touch means too much to me
Two lips must insit and two more to be kissed
Or they'll never know what love can do
To each his own I've found my own one and only you
(To each his own I've found my own) one and only you

COLD COLD HEART
(Hank Williams)
« © '51 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I tried so hard my dear to show that you're my every dream
Yet you're afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A mem'ry from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart
[ piano ]
Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now for things I didn't do
In anger unkind words are said that make the teardrops start
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

ANNIVERSARY SONG
(Al Jolson - Saul Chaplin)
« © '58 Shapiro-Bernstein Co, ASCAP »
Oh how we danced on the night we were wed
We vowed our true love though a word wasn't said
The world was in bloom there were stars in the skies
Except for the few that were there in your eyes
Dear as I held you so close in my arms
Angels were singing a hymn to your charms
Two hearts gently beating were mourmoring low
My darling I love you so
The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn
The sun shone anew but the dance lingered on
Could we but relive that sweet moment sublime
We'd find that our love is unaltered by time

LITTLE WHITE LIES
(Walter Donaldson)
« © '58 Donaldson Publishing, ASCAP / Larry Spier Inc, ASCAP / Tobago Music, ASCAP »
The moon was all aglow and heaven was in your eyes
The night that you told me those little white lies
The stars all seemed to know that you didn't mean all those sighs
The night that you told me those little white lies
I try but there's no forgetting when evening appears
I sigh but there's no regretting in spite of my tears
The devil was in your heart but heaven was in your eyes
The night that you told me those little white lies
[ sax ]
That night that you told me those little white lies
I try but there's no forgetting...

SOLITUDE
(Irving Mills - Duke Ellington - Eddie De Lange)
« © '58 Mills Music, ASCAP / Famous Music, ASCAP / Scarsdale Music, ASCAP »
In my solitude you haunt me with reveries of days gone by
In my solitude you haunt me with memories that never die
I sit in my chair I'm filled with dispair so one could be so sad
With gloom everywhere I sit and I stare I know that I'll soon go mad
In my solitude I'm praying dear Lord above bring back my love
[ sax ]
With gloom everywhere I sit and I stare...
(Bring back my love)

BLUEBERRY HILL
(Al Lewis - Larry Stock - Vincent Rose)
« © '40 Chappell & Co, ASCAP / Larry Stock Music, ASCAP / Sovereign Music, ASCAP »
I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill
On Blueberry Hill when I found you
The moon stood still on Blueberry Hill
And linger until my dreams came true
Though the wind in the willows plays love's sweet melody
But all of those vows we made were never to be
Though we're apart you're a part of me still
For you were my thrill on Blueberry Hill
The wind in the willows plays...

« © '56 MCA Music, ASCAP »
Heartaches heartaches
My loving you meant only heartaches
Your kiss was such a sacred thing to me
I can't believe it's just a burning memory
Heartaches heartaches
What does it matter how my heart breaks
I should be happy with someone new
But my heart aches for you
[ whitle ]
Your kiss was such a sacred thing to me
I can't believe it's just a burning memory
Heartaches heartaches...

ST. LOUIS BLUES
(William C. Handy)
« © '14 Handy Bros Music, ASCAP »
Mhm I hate to see that evening sun go down
I hate to see that evening sun go down
Cause my baby she done left this town
I'm feeling tomorrow just like I feel today
Yes if I'm feeling tomorrow just like I feel today
I'll pack my trunk and make my getaway
St Louis woman with all her diamond ring
She pulls me around by her apron strings
Well if it wasn't for the powder and for her store bought hair
That girl that I love she wouldn't go nowhere nowhere
Got the St Louis Blues just as blue as I can be
(Got the blues got the blues got the St Louis blues)
Yes that girl's got a heart like a rock cast in the sea
(Got the blues got the blues got the St Louis blues)
Or else she wouldn't have gone so far from me
(Got the blues got the St Louis blues)
Oh well I love that woman like a school boy loves his pies
(You shouldn't do that you shouldn't do that)
Yes oh well I love that woman like a school boy loves his pies
(You shouldn't do that you shouldn't do that)
And I'll love my baby until the day I die
