Pat Boone's first album of traditional religious hymns seems, if anything, to come as naturally to him as his trademark ballads, if not more so. Indeed, this music was an important part of his everyday life — an expression of his deeply felt religious beliefs — long before his appearance on the pop music scene. So, it is not surprising that these hymns are delivered with a respectful, heartfelt sincerity. There is a consistently fine quality of gentleness, comfort, and assurance about them. From the start there is not only a serene harmony to each piece individually, but a seamless flow that carries through the entire album. The natural corollary is one that cannot be attained by any contrived, ornate, or ostentatious elaboration — and that effect is the uplift of the listener. "Sweet Hour of Prayer," "Softly and Tenderly," "Whispering Hope," and all the others are balm for the human spirit.

OLD RUGGED CROSS
(George Bernard)
« © '41 Word Music, ASCAP »
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners were slain
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true
It's shame and reproach gladly bear
Then he'll call me some day to my home far away
Where his glory forever I'll share
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross...

(Stuart Hamblen)

It is no secren what God can do
What he's done for others he'll do for you
With arms wide open he'll part anew
It is no secren what God can do
The chimes of time ring out the news another day is through
Someone slipped and fell was that someone you
You may have long for added strenght your courage to renew
Do not be this hearten for I bring hope to you
It is no secren what God can do...

WHISPERING HOPE
(Alice Hawthorne - Alton Howard)
« © '51 Howard Publishing, BMI »
Soft as the voice of an angel breathing a lesson unheard
Hope with a gentle persuasion whispers a comforting word
Wait till the darkness is over wait till life's tempest is done
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow after the sunshine is gone
Whispering hope oh how welcome Thy voice
Making my heart any sorrow rejoice
Then when the night is upon us why should a heart sink away
When the dark midnight is over watch for the breaking of day
Whispering hope...

SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER
(William B. Bradbury - William Walford)
« © '56 Unichappell Music, BMI »
Sweet hour of prayer sweet hour of prayer
That calls me from a world of care
And bids me at my Father's throne
Make all my wants and wishes known
In seasons of distress and grief
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempter's snare
By Thy return sweet hour of prayer
Sweet hour of prayer sweet hour of prayer
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless
And since he bids me seek his face
Believe his word and trust his grace
I'll cast on him my every care
And wait for Thee sweet hour of prayer

MY GOD IS REAL (YES GOD IS REAL)
(Kenneth Morris)
« © '57 Martin And Morris Music, BMI »
There are some things I may not know
There are some places I can't go
But I am sure of this one thing
That God is real for I can feel him deep within
My god is real real in my soul
My God is real for he has washed and made me whole
His love for me is like pure gold
My God is real for I can feel him deep in my soul
I cannot tell just how you felt
When Jesus took your sins away
But since that day yes since that hour
God has been real for I can feel his holy power
My god is real real in my soul...

BEYOND THE SUNSET
(Virgil P. Brock - Blanche K. Brock)
« © '50 Word Music, ASCAP »
Beyond the sunset oh blissful morning when with our Saviour heaven has begun
Earth's toiling ended oh glorious dawning beyond the sunset when day is done
Beyond the sunset no clouds will gather no storms will threaten no fears annoy
Oh day of gladness oh day unending beyond the sunset eternal joy
Beyond the sunset o glad reunion with our dear loved ones who've gone before
In that fair homeland we'll know no parting beyond the sunset forever more

IN THE GARDEN
(Austin C. Miles)
« © '46 Word Music, ASCAP »
I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear the son of God discloses
And he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there none other was ever known
He speaks and the sound of his voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing
And the melody that he gave to me within my heart is ringing
And he walks with me and he talks with me...

WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN
(A.P. Carter)
« © '35 Peer International, BMI »
(Will the circle be unbroken by and by by and by)
There are loved ones in the glory whose dear forms you often miss
When you close your earthly story will you join them in their bliss
Will the circle be unbroken by and by by and by
In a better home awaiting in the sky in the sky
You can picture happy gatherings round the fireside long ago
And you think of tearful partings when they left you here below
Will the circle be unbroken...
(Will the circle be unbroken by and by by and by)
In a better home awaiting in the sky in the sky

« © '57 Music Sales, ASCAP »
Now the day is over night is drawing nigh
Shadows of the evening steal across the sky

With Thy tendrest blessing may our eyes disclose
When the morning wakens then may we arise
Pure and fresh and sinless in Thy holy arm
