Clint Black also produced D'Lectrified — his first time as producer — and it's probably a good thing, because this is easily the most eccentric and personal recording project he has ever released. The album opens with a jazzy cover of Toy Caldwell's "Bob Away My Blues," complete with horns. The sound is very uptown and snazzy, and Black sings the hell out of the song. This track may not exactly set the mood of the album, but it sure states the mindset. Black pulls tunes from all over the ballpark: Eric Idle's "Galaxy Song," Leon Russell's "Dixie Lullaby," and a slightly revised cover of Waylon Jennings' "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" (titled "Are You Sure Waylon Done It This Way"). Black also wrote/co-wrote several songs, including "Hand in the Fire" and "Been There." His wife, Lisa Hartman-Black, sings with him on "When I Said I Do," and she's believable. He also includes rearranged versions of his hit singles "Burn One Down" and "No Time to Kill." Guest players include Jennings, Bruce Hornsby, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, and Steve Wariner. Amid the welter of ideas, players, and influences at work here, Black's singing shines through. When it's all said and done, D'lectrified is a pretty wonderful album, easily the most musical record Black has ever done.

BOB AWAY MY BLUES
(Toy T. Caldwell)
« © '98 Spirit One Music, BMI »
Well I'm going down to the river I've got a cane pole in my hand
I've got my red worms in a Maxwell House coffee can
I'm gonna sit under a shade tree on a river bank where it's cool
I'm gonna close my eyes and dream and let that cork bob away my blues
Well I'd wake up every morning I'd pick peaches all day
And on saturday nights we'll have a dance or two we might waller in the hay
Now the only thing that ever whipped my pa was this bad dude called old age
And his last years was his best years and this is what he had to say
He said boy I've worked this dirt all my life but things ain't been good for a while
Why don't you move to the city make a little money
You might be the first one in the family ever to die with a smile
I took his advice things going well but my friends are far and few
But whoever said a city boy can't have the country blues
Whoever said a city boy can't have the country blues
Whoever said a city boy can't have the country blues
Well honey they ain't talked to me and you

(Waylon Jennings)
« © '75 Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
[ with Waylon Jennings ]
Lord it's the same old thing fiddle and guitar where do we take it from here
Rhinestone suits new shiny cars it's been the same way for years we found a change
Somebody told me when I came to Nashville son you've fin'ly got it made
Ol' Waylonmade it here we're all sure that you will
But I don't think Waylon done this a way
Well I don't think ol' Waylon done it this a way
[ piano ]
Ten years on the road makin' one night stands speedin' my young life away
Tell me one more time just so I'll understand
Are you sure ol' Waylon done it this a way ol' Waylon really do it this a way
[ harmonica ]
I've seen the world with a five piece band a looking at the back side of me
Singing my songs one of his now and then but I don't think Waylon done 'em this a way
No I don't think ol' Waylon done 'em this a way
[ fiddle - piano - harmonica - guitar ]
(Woke up this mornin' it was drizzlin' rain around the curve come a long black train
Heard somebody yodel and a hobo moan Jimmy he's dead he's been a long time gone yeah)

HAND IN THE FIRE
(Clint Black - Hayden Nicholas)
« © '98 Blackened Music, BMI »
I haven't been there I haven't done that I never been one to know where it's at
I've been around and I seen a few things I don't know what a lot of it means
The truth'll never ring clear as a bell but I don't believe that you never can tell
Most things I don't have a clue I can tell by looking I know all about you
You don't have to put your hand in the fire
To know your little fingers are gonna get burned
You don't have to be standing on the moon
To know your little planet is gonna get turned
You don't have to take a walk in the sea
And know it gets a little deep and it's really not blue
I don't have to put my arms all around you
To know I wanna hold you and to know that I love you
[ dobro ]
I've never been one to go to extremes I see 'em coming and I get in between
Never ahead and never behind I figure everything'll happen in time
And just in time it's happening now it's not up to either one of us to ever know how
With both eyes closed I could easily see it's happening to you and it's gonna be me
You don't have to put your hand...
You don't have to put your hand...

GALAXY SONG
(Eric Idle - John Duprez)
« © '98 Virgin Songs, BMI »
[ with Eric Idle ]
Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
Revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
It's orbiting at nineteen miles a second so it's reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the Galaxy we call the Milky Way
Our Galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars
It's 100,000 light years side to side
It bulges in the middle 16,000 light years thick
But out by us it's just 3,000 light years wide
We're 30,000 light years from galactic central point
We go round every 200 million years
And our Galaxy is only one of millions and billions
In this amazing and expanding Universe
Our Universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whiz
As fast as it can go the speed of light you know
12 million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is
So remember when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
Cause I'm afraid that we've been cheated here on Earth

WHEN I SAID I DO
(Clint Black)
« © '98 Blackened Music, BMI »
[ with Lisa Hartman Black ]
These times are troubled and these times are good
And they're always gonna be they rise and they fall
We take 'em all the way that we should together you and me forsaking them all
And deep in the night and by the light of day
It always looks the same true love always does
And here by your side or a million miles away
Nothin's ever gonna change the way I feel the wait is is the way that it was
When I said I do I meant that I will till the end of all time
Be faithful and true devoted to you that's what I had in mind when I said I do
Well this old world keeps changin' and the world stays the same
For all who came before and it goes hand and hand
Only you and I can undo all that we became
That makes us so much more (so much more) that a woman and a man
And after everything that comes and goes around
Has only passed us by here alone in our dreams
I know there's a lonely heart in every lost and found
But forever you and I will be the ones who found out what forever means
When I said I do...
Truer than true you know that I'll always be there for you
That's what I had in mind (that's what I had in mind) when I said I do

BEEN THERE
(Clint Black - Steve Wariner)
« © '98 Blackened Music, BMI »
[ with Steve Wariner ]
Did you ever wake up in the middle of the night and wonder where you were
You need the one and only that can hold you tight and you reach for her
But she's not with you hmm just wish this trip would end
Well you know I've been there I don't want to go back again
Did you ever wake up in the middle of the day and wonder who you are
You suddenly discover there's a price you pay for gettin' this far
And it's the part of you oh you really don't have to spend
You know I've been there and I don't want to go back again
Well there's so many moments that I've left incomplete
Those are the moments that I'm not gonna repeat no
Did you ever wake up in the middle of a dream that didn't come true
You think you've gotta give up on making that scene and seeing it through
Feel like breaking when you really just need to bend
You know I've been there and I'll never go back again uh
[ guitar - harmonica ]
Well there's so many moments that I've left incomplete
Those are the moments that I'm not gonna repeat
Did you ever wake up in the middle of the night
Did you ever wake up in the middle of the day
Did you ever wake up in the middle of a dream

DIXIE LULLABY
(Claude R. Bridges - Chris Stainton)
« © '98 Cheschire Music, BMI »
[ Bruce Hornsby ]
Why don't you gather round me people got a song to sing
About that sweet magnolia thyme
Black-eyed Susan made some catfish stew and papa brought some homemade wine
All you southern children like to rock'n roll the TV mamas tell you why
They got it on the boat from Africa it's that Dixie Lullaby
Well Blind Willie Time he had a dime shoe shine stand down on Beale Street
And Willie would stop and just to say hello all the shoes he'd meet
Why are you so happy said the clean white buck
You got no reason to be happy Mr Time
And Willie would stop and just pop his rag with a Dixie Lullaby
[ piano - clariner ]
So now you know the story of my southern home with a honeysuckle wine
And if you ever think that you might come yourself
You ought to keep this thought in mind
All you easy riders better watch you step and if you're walkin' down below the line
That Louisiana man is gonna get you yet with his Dixie Lullaby
He's got a Dixie Lullaby he's got a Dixie Lullaby

WHERE YOUR LOVE WON'T GO
(Clint Black - Steve Wariner)
« © '98 Blackened Music, BMI »
It's a lonesome avenue I'm barely living on with a broken heart that's dying over you
I've done all that I can do to try and make you love me too
Tell me where did I go wrong
Girl I've had enough of giving you my love when you won't give it back I know
You don't love me I'm on a one-way street where your love won't go
[ guitar - dobro ]
I won't cross the burning bridges you left behind
Though I've shed the tears to put those fires out
If I didn't do my part from the bottom of my heart
Yeah I don't know what love is all about
Girl I've had enough...
Well you gave me all the signs though it never crossed my mind
You would hurt me more than I could know
You don't love me I'm on a one-way street where your love won't go

LOVE SHE CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT
(Clint Black - Skip Ewing)
« © '98 Blackened Music, BMI »
He gives her attention he's constantly carefully planting the seeds
The only thing missing is really the only thing she needs
And he can't give that to her and she can't find it with him
She'll have to find her way out of a love she's not really in
She can live with what goes with leaving she knows it's the only way
Though it kills her to give up believing she can't live with herself if she stays
She could settle for what she'd be feeling if she gave in and worked this one out
She doesn't want the kind of love she can live with
She wants the kind of love she can't live without
[ guitar ]
She looks in the mirror and sees all the sadness in her eyes
It's never been clearer what he's asking her to sacrifice
But she can't be his forever she can't even be his for now
She'll have to be kind to them both and let go of him somehow
She can live with what goes...
And the hardest part is she loves him
But she doesn't want the kind of love she can live with
She wants the kind of love she can't live without

BURN ONE DOWN
(Clint Black - Hayden Nicholas - Frankie Miller)
« © '93 Blackened Music, BMI »
I guess you're off to have your fun another ending just begun
And I know what I don't see really shouldn't bother me
So go and have yourself a ball you'll be at no one's beck and call
And with that fire in your eyes another lover's moon will rise
And someone else will take the fall
And that's just the way you are I've known all along
Some candles always burn even when the light is gone
The strongest of flames it won't burn eternally
When you find another friend who'll light your candle up again
You can burn one down for me
So you don't matter anymore I'll convince myself I'm sure
As if I give a damn that's just the way I am
So go on and pour yourself some wine with who'll ever spend your time
Cause anyone can see you won't be cryin' over me and you never were that kind
And that's just the way you are...
[ harmonica - sax ]
The strongest of flames...
When you find another friend...

WHO I USE TO BE
(Clint Black - Hayden Nicholas)
« © '98 Blackened Music, BMI »
The memories and emotions that I've been through are things I can't unlearn
But I won't go on standing on the bridges you've tried so hard to burn
I can't put those fires out and let somebody in
If everything my life's about is who we might have been
Till we forget the love we lost we won't remember how to love again
That's who I use to be holding on to nothing
Giving everything I use to be to belong to someone
That I know is who I use to see when I looked at you
You were never who I use to see
That's who I use to be and I'm not who I use to be
Coming to my senses now I'm feelin' things I thought I couldn't feel
I don't take for granted if it feels like love it must not be real
I still find myself out on some bridges now and then
Stuck out in the middle tryin' to reach the other end
But I'm through holding back the flames to show somebody how to love again
That's who I use to be...

HARMONY
(Clint Black - Hayden Nicholas - Kenny Loggins)
« © '98 Blackened Music, BMI »
[ with Kenny Loggins ]
With the rivers running to the sky to rain upon the land
Our children's children's sands of time are slipping through our hands
Take heed in what's become of Eden you and me from seed to seed
Just how does you garden grow it's likely only Heaven knows
Harmony from the very start weren't we changing it
Don't we all agree that in every part we're more than rearranging harmony
Do we move the mountains that we climb just because we're here
Can we show the forests to the blind to see the trees we clear
And if Mother Nature holds her ground and our seeds are still around
Will we watch our garden grow to something only Heaven knows
Harmony we're the only ones who can't live in it
Everything and everyone can get along in every way in
Harmony from the very start...
I believe it's gonna be when everybody here can sing along singin' it harmony
Stand on up say the word together all our voices can be heard
Everybody knows the key to livin' in harmony
[ guitar ]
Take heed in what's become of Eden you and me from seed to seed
Just how does your garden grow it's likely only Heaven knows
Harmony we all just have to believe
Don't we all agree that in every part we're more than rearranging harmony
I believe it's gonna be when everybody here can sing along singin' it harmony yeah
Stand on up I believe in harmony
I believe say the word...

NO TIME TO KILL
(Clint Black - Hayden Nicholas)
« © '93 Blackened Music, BMI »
There's no time to kill between the cradle and the grave
Father time still takes a toll on every minute that you save
Legal tender's never gonna change the number of your days
The highest cost of livin's dyin' that's one everybody pays
So have it spent before you get the bill there's no time to kill
If we'd known ten yerars ago today would be ten years from now
Would we spend tomorrow's yesterday and make it last somehow
Or lead the cheers in someone else's game and never learn to play
And see the rules of thumb are all the same that measure every day
The grass is green on both sides of the hill there's no time to kill
No time to kill even I've said it and probably always will
But I can look ahead and see that time ain't standing still
No time to kill but time to change the kind of hurry I've been in
Quit this work and worry lookin' back at where I've been
If you don't look ahead nobody will there's no time to kill
[ piano ]
If we had an hourglass to watch each one go by
Or a bell to mark each one to pass we'd just see what they fly
Would we escalate the value to the worth its weight in gold
Or would we never know the fortunes that we have till we grow old
And do we just keep killin' time until there's no time to kill
No time to kill even I've said it...
