MONKEY AND THE ELEPHANT
(Shel Silverstein)
« © '74 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
(Okay kids, I'm gonna sing you a song now bout a monkey and an elephant.
It's all happened a long time ago. Whenever I say "a long time ago" you all jump in there with me.
Okay? Are you ready?)
Well once the world was full of monkeys a long time ago
And the elephants with the big long trunkies a long time ago
And the elephants swam in the Zazafram Sea
And the monkey swung from the zilibum tree
And life was silly as it could be a long time ago
One day the elephant was feelin' spunky a long time ago
She went to have a talk with the monkey a long time ago
And the elephant said oh Lordy me I think I'm in love with the bumblebee
Do you think she's a little too little for me a long time ago
Now the monkey said you're thinkin' like a donkey a long time ago
Ah she's so small and you're sorta chunky a long time ago
So sit right down upon my knee I'll tell you why your love can never be
It's a physical imposibility any old time at all
Now the elephant's tears went plunkity plunky a long time ago
Then he went home to pack his trunky a long time ago
He said I see that bee was not for me so he went and married a little gray flee
And they were happy as they could be and they had children one two three
But if you wanna know how please don't ask me it was a long long time ago

[ Jeannie Bare & Bobby Bare Jr ]
Mama where'd I come from did they give me to you free
Did you buy me in a boystore mama where'd you find me
Well Bobby I found you in a smile

Mama where'd I come from that don't sound right to me
Well I'll tell you darling God in all his sweetness smiled on us yes he did
Then an angel and brought you on the wings of love
Did a doctor bring me like John said he did

GIVING TREE
(Shel Silverstein)
« © '74 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
(Y'all settle down! Everybody be quiet because daddy's gonna sing a quiet song
Called the Giving Tree)
Once there was a giving tree who loved a little boy
And every day the boy would come to play
Swinging from her branches sleeping in her shade
Laughing all the summer hours away
And so they'd love and oh the tree was happy oh the tree was glad
But soon the boy grew older and one day he came to say
Can you give me some money tree to buy some things I found
I have no money said the tree just apples twigs and leaves
But you can take my apples boy and sell them in the town
And so he did and oh the tree was happy oh the tree was glad
And soon again the boy came back and he said to the tree
I'm now a man and I must have a house that's all my own
I can't give you a house she said the forest is my house
But you may cut my branches off and build yourself a home
And so he did and oh the tree was happy oh the tree was glad
And the time went by and the boy came back with sadness in his eyes
My life has turned so cold he said and I need sunny days
I've nothin' but my trunk she said but you may cut it down
And built yourself a boat and sail away
And so he did and oh the tree was happy oh the tree was glad
And after years the boy came back both of them were old
I really cannot help ye if you ask another gift
I'm nothin' but an old stump now I'm sorry boy she said
I'm sorry but I've nothin' more to give
I don't need very much now just a quiet place to rest
The boy he'd whispered with a weary smile
Well said the tree an old stump still is good for that
Come boy she said sit down sit down and rest awhile
And so he did and oh the tree was happy oh the tree was glad

YOU ARE
(Shel Silverstein)
« © '74 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
Who's the greatest singer in the land (you are)
Who's the world's most sweetest kindest man (you are)
Who's gonna give you some ice-cream
If you sing this thing just right (you are) oh outside
Now who's the handsomest man in Tennessee (you are)
Who's the trunk of this old family tree (you are)
And when ye kids get old enough to work
Who's gonna live off you (you are) yeah that's true
You are the world's greatest father (thank you kids)
No matter what you say you're never wrong (you're right)
And it's so nice of you to bother (it ain't no bother)
To teach us this equal silly song
Now who's the one who watches while you grow (you are)
Who's the one who whipes your dirty nose (you are)
Who's gobnna treat you better than any daddy ever did (you are)
Oh thank you kids
You are the world's greatest father
No matter what you say you're never wrong (you got there right)
And it's so nice of you to bother (it ain't no bother)
To teach us this equal silly song (just keep singin' now)
Who's the one that buys you all your clothes (you are)
Who's the one who let ye sing on all his shows (you are)

UNICORN
(Shel Silverstein)
« © '62 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
(Okay, I'll tell you what I'm gonna do now. I'm gonna tell you about a unicorn.
Now who knows what a unicorn is? Let me tell you about.)
A long time ago when the earth was green
Well there was more kinda animals than you've ever seen
And they just run around free while the world was being born
And loveliest of them all was the unicorn
There was green alligators and long neck geese
Humpty bumpty camels and some chimpanzees
There was cats and rats and elephants but sure as you're born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn
But the Lord seen some sinning and it caused him a pain
He said stand back I'm gonna make it rain
So hey brother Noah I'll tell you what to do
Go and build me a floatin' Zoo
And you take 'em two alligators and a couple of geese
Two humpty bumpty camels and chimpanzees
Cats and rats and elephants but sure as you're born
Noah don't forget my unicorn
Now Noah was there and he answered the callin'
And he finished up the ark as the rain started fallin'
Then he marched in the animals two by two
And sung out as they went through
Hey Lord I got your two alligators and a couple of geese
Two humpty bumpty camels and chimpanzees
Cats and rats and elephants but sure as you're born
Lord I just don't see your unicorn
Well Noah looked out through the drivin' rain
But the unicorns were hidin' playing silly games
They were kickin' and a splashin' in the early morn
Oh them foolish unicorns
Then the ducks started duckin' and the sneaks started sneakin'
And the elephants started elephantin' and the boat started shakin'
The mice started sqeekin' and the lions started roarin'
And everyone's aboard but the unicorns
I mean a green alligators and long neck geese
The humpty bumpty camels and chimpanzees
Noah cried close the door cause the rain is a pourin'
And we just don't wait for them unicorns
And then the dark started movin' and it drifted with the tide
And unicorns looked up from the rock and cried
And the water came up and sorta floated them away
And that's why you've never seen a unicorn to this day
You'll see lots of alligators and long neck geese
You'll see humpty bumpty camels and chimpanzees
You'll see cats and rats and elephants but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorn

CLOUDY SKY
(Shel Silverstein - Baxter Taylor)
« © '69 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
Love is just a cloudy sky as far as I can see
And that old cloud up in the sky he's in love like me
The moon she is a pretty girl who lives up in the stars
And that old cloud he's a lonely man who loves her from afar
When that moon smiles down on him cloud is all a wonder
Then he starts to sing to her and you know that's what makes the thunder
That's what makes the thunder
Love is just a cloudy sky...
And you know that cloud is a jealous man and if the night is clear
He'll drift across hide her face so no one else can see 'er
Some dark nights she won't come out when he starts a calling
And tears come rolling down his cheeks that's the rain a falling
But when the night is gettin' light and he can see her leaving
He blows a wind kiss cross the sky saying see ye tomorrow evening darling
See you tomorrow evening
Love is just a cloudy sky...

SHE THINKS I CAN
(Shel Silverstein)
« © '74 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
(Okay, hold it kids, hold it! Listen! I wanna sing a song now especially for mama.
Okay? This is for mama.)
She looks at me with the eyes of a child
She thinks I can reach out and turn back the tide
And I'm just a man and I can't work no wonders
But she thinks I can so I try
She follows me down the dark pathways I'm leadin'
She's still believing that I'll find the way
And I tell her I can't give her all that she's needin'
But she thinks I can so I may
I may find a way to turn darkness to suinshine
I may find a rainbow behind the next hill
But with her beside me and heaven to guide me
Lord she thinks I can so I will
[ piano ]
I may find a way to turn darkness to suinshine
I may find a rainbow behind the next hill
But with her beside me and heaven to guide me
Lord she thinks I can she thinks I can so I will
I will Lord I will

SCARLET RIBBONS (FOR HER HAIR)
(Jack O. Segal - Evelyn Danzing)
« © '57 Belwin Mills Music, ASCAP »
[ Jeannie Bare ]
I peeked in to say goodnight and I heard my child in prayer
Send to me some scarlet ribbons scarlet ribbons for her hair
All the stores were closed and shuttered all the streets were dark and bare
In our town no scarlet ribbons scarlet ribbons for her hair
Through the night my heart was aching just before the dawn was breaking
I peeked in and on her bed in gay profusion laying there
Lovely ribbons scarlet ribbons scarlet ribbons for her hair
If I live to be a hundred I will never know from where
Came those lovely scarlet ribbons scarlet ribbons for her hair
If I live to be a hundred...

(Shel Silverstein - Mike Settle)
« © '74 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
(Okay, is everybody ready to be animals? Yeah!)
See that bluebird on a limb he wants you to fly away with him
He wants you to wear a featherly vest
And he wants you to sleep in a featherly nest
But he can't have you no no no I ain't gonna let you go
Birds in the sky you'd better see my little birds are staying with me
See that fish down in the sea he wants you to paddle away from me
He wants you to splash and bubble and swim
He wants you to live in the water with him
But he can't have you no no no I ain't gonna let you go
Birds in the sky and fish in the sea my little fishes are staying with me
[ guitar ]
Hear that lion roarin' in the Zoo he wants you to come and live there too
But he don't know that when you're cryin' you can roar louder than any ole lion
So he can't have you no no no I ain't gonna let you go
