COWBOY AND THE POET (FASTER HORSES)
(Tom T. Hall)
« © '75 Hallnote Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
He was an old time cowboy don't you understand
His eyes were sharp as razor blades his face was leather tent
His toes were pointed inward from a hangin' on a horse
He was an old philosopher of course
He was so thin I swear you could have used him for a whip
He had to drink the beer to keep his breeches on his hips
I knew I had to ask him about the mysteries of life
He spit between his boots and he replied
It's faster horses younger women older whiskey more money
[ trumpet ]
He smiled and all his teets were covered with tabacco stains
He said it don't do man no good to pray for peace and rain
Peace and rain is just a way to say prosperity
And buffalo chips is all that means to me
I told him I was a poet I was looking for the truth
I do not care for horses whiskey women or other loot
I said I was a writer my soul was all on fire
He looked at me and said you are a liar
It's faster horses younger women older whiskey more money
Well I was disillusioned if I say the least
I grabbed him by the collar and I jerked him to his feet
And there was somethin' cold and shiny laying in my head
So I started to believe the things he said
Well my poet days are over and I'm back to being me
As I enjoy the peace and comfort of reality
If my boy ever asks me what it is that I have learned
I think that I will readilly affirm
Son it's faster horses younger women older whiskey more money
Faster horses younger women older whiskey more money
Faster horses younger women older whiskey more money

COWBOYS AND DADDYS
(Marty Cooper)
« © '73 Martin Cooper Music, ASCAP »
I know you're sleepy it's time to go home
Mama is waiting for you all alone
But I'll see you next Sunday let me dry your eyes
You know cowboys and daddys don't ever cry
I liked the movie the picnic was fun
Of course I still love you you don't have to ask me son
And I'll see you next sunday and let me dry your eyes
You know cowboys and daddys don't ever cry
I dream someday we could go away
I'd take you down to Mexico or upon Hudson's Bay
One but only fool knows a grief of a schemes
I've never been too good at planning it seems
Someday when you're older and the cowboy's grown
You'll know how it hurts everytime I take you home
I wait for each Sunday with tears in my eyes
That's when cowboys and daddys don't ever cry
Cowboys and saddys don't ever cry

HIGH PLAINS JAMBOREE
(Terry Allen)
« © '75 Green Shoes Publishing, BMI »
She was a honky tonker and he was a family man
And she showed him her gold teeth when he'd hold her little hand
And they met out on the highway at the Paradise Motel Lounge
On a Saturday nights when things weren't right between him ans his wife in town
And they're just another couple on a High Plains Jamboree
Playing out them sad songs they understand
Yeah they're just another couple making jukebox memories
And walking into trouble hand in hand
[ dobro ]
Well now she weren't no maid of cotton and he weren't no hell of a man
But they must have loved each other like only the lonely can
Cause they slow-danced through the neons like sorrow through a song
Then they carried the tune to the motel room and played it all night long
And they're just another couple...
Yes they're walking into trouble hand in hand

(Ray Wylie Hubbard)
« © '75 Tennessee Swamp Fox Music, ASCAP »
He was born in Oklahoma
And his wife's name is Betty Lou Thelma Liz
He ain't responsible for what he's doin'
Cause his mother made him what he is
And it's up against the wall redneck mother
Mother who has raised her son so well
He's thirty-four and drinking in some honky tonk
Just a kicking hippies' asses and raisin' hell
He sure does like to drink that Falstaff Beer
And chase it down with that Wild Turkey Liquor
He dives a '57 GMC pickup truck
With a gun rack and a Goat Roper Needs Love Too bumper sticker
Yeah it's up against the wall redneck mother...
[ guitar ]
M is for the mud flaps she gave me for my pickup truck
And O is for the oil I put on my hair
T is for Thunder Bird H is for Haggard
E is for Eggs R is for Redneck
And it's up against the wall redneck mother...
Yeah it's up against the wall redneck mother...

STRANGER
(Shel Silverstein)
« © '75 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
From the West there came a stranger I'll tell his story now
And the reason they called him stranger is because he loved a cow
Yeah you might think that lovin' a cow is somethin' sorta strange
But oh my friend did you ever spend six months on the ranGE
Well the days get long and the nights get cold
And a feller gets lonely and a feller grows old
And the feller starts to wonder
If he'll ever find a pretty little blue-eyed golden-haired girl somehow
And the feller gets out and fucks a cow
Yodel-de-lee yodel-de-lee git along little doggie
Yodel-de-lee yodel-de-lee it's your misfortune not my own
Oh come in you old brown eyed darlee I love you
Yodel-de-lee yodel-de-lee wow wow

AMARILLO HIGHWAY
(Terry Allen)
« © '75 Green Shoes Publishing, BMI »
Well I'm a high straight in Plainview side bet in Idalou
And a fresh deck in New Deal
Yeah some call me high hand some call me low hand
But I'm holding what I am the wheel
Yeah I'm panhandlin' man handlin'
Post holin' high rollin' dust bowlin' daddy
And I ain't got no blood veins I just got them four lanes
Of hard Amarillo highway
Yeah I don't wear no Stetson but I'm willin' to bet son
That I'm a big a Texan as you are
There's a girl in her barefeet asleep on the back seat
And that trunk's full of Pearl and Lone Star
Cause I'm panhandlin' man handlin'...
[ steel ]
I gonna hop outta bed pop a pill in my head
Gonna bust the Hub for the Golden Spread under blue skies
Gonna stuff my hide behind some power glide
And get some southern fried back in my eyes
Cause I'm panhandlin' man handlin'
Post holin' high rollin' dust bowlin' daddy
Yeah the close as I'll ever get to heaven
Is speedin' up ol' 87 of that hard-ass Amarillo highway
Yeah I'm panhandlin' man handlin'...
