Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley teamed up in the late '70s and created some fun, beer-soaked honky tonk music like Hank Williams Jr., but without the ominous undercurrents. The cover of this 1979 LP shows the two ruffled-looking country stars drinking beer in front of a package store; in the background, their primer-splotched jalopy pulls a fishing boat on a trailer. This carefully staged photo perfectly conveys the record's carefree atmosphere of working-class recreation. The duo's two biggest hits, "Just Good Ol' Boys" and "Holding the Bag," are here, plus "Tell Ole I Ain't Here He Better Get On Home," which just missed the country Top Ten. Bandy and Stampley alternate vocals, sing in unison, and at times join together in ragged harmony on favorites such as "Honky Tonk Man" and "Bye Bye Love," and get serious for a moment on "Make a Little Love Each Day." If you are familiar with the title track, Just Good Ol' Boys will be almost exactly what you expect it to be, and that's not bad.

JUST GOOD OL' BOYS
(Ansley Fleetwood)
« © '79 Brandwood Music, BMI / Mullet Music, BMI »
Well I've been kicked out of might near every bar around
I've been locked up for drivin' a hundred and twenty through town
Well I've been shot at and cut with a knife
For messing round with another man's wife
But other than that we ain't nothing just good ol' boys
I threw my boss out a window and got fired from my last job
Hot wired a city truck and turned it over in the mayor's yard
Well I beat my brother-in-law half to death
I lost twenty bucks on his football bet
But other than that we ain't nothing just good ol' boys
Good ol' boys we're all the same ain't no way we'll ever change
Mean no harm by the things we do or the trouble that we get into
Other than a wild hair once in a while we can't help it it's just our style
And good ol' boys is all we'll ever be
I've got an alimony payment that's six weeks overdue
I got caught with a trunk full of bootleg out of state booze
I hocked my wife's diamond ring last June
Bought me an outboard Evinrude
But other than that we ain't nothing just good ol' boys
Good ol' boys we're all the same...
Good ol' boys is all we'll ever be

MAKE A LITTLE LOVE EACH DAY
(Buck Moore)
« © '79 Screen Gems Music, BMI »
You've got to make a little love each day
That's the way you make it stay
If you don't use it you're gonna lose it
You've got to make a little love each day
Now an apple a day keeps the doctor away
I'm sure that sayin's true
But lovin' a day will keep the cheatin' away
So listen what I'm telling you
You can say it every day but there ain't no way
To tell her that you love her too much
She needs to hear those sweet little words
Just like she needs your touch
You've got to make a little love each day
That's the way you make it stay
If you don't use it you're gonna lose it
So make a little love each day
Now love is only friendly persuasion
But if you use it right
You'll find yourself a wakin' up each mornin'
Feelin' high as a kite
It's all give and take but you've gotta make it
Anytime you get the urge
Just take her hand say honey I'm your man
And whisper those sweet little words
You've got to make a little love each day...
You've got to make a little love each day...
You've got to make a little love each day...

TELL OLE I AIN'T HERE HE BETTER GO ON HOME
(Wayne Kemp)
« © '79 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Well I was playin' the pinball prayin' for a ten ball
A cussin' that ole machine
With a couple of girls a hangin' on my back
Then the phone started ringin' and Moe started screamin'
Hey Joe it's your old lady and she's mad
She let her fingers do the walkin' till she's found out where you're at
(And she said) tell ole I ain't here he better get on home
Or else he's gonna find me and the baby gone
If I have to come down after him he's gonna wish he'd come to the phone
So tell ole I ain't here he better get on home
[ steel - guitar ]
Well the good Lard knows I love her but she don't understand
Just how much I love this ole honky tonk atmosphere
But when the telephone starts to ringin' it scares the hell right out of her man
And I holler out loud if that's for me Moe tell her I ain't here
(But she said) tell ole I ain't here he better get on home...
So tell ole I ain't here he better get on home

HONKY TONK MAN
(Johnny Horton - Tillman Franks - Howard Hausey)
« © '56 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
Well I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop
I love to give the girls a whirl to the music of an old jukebox
But when my money's all gone I'm on the telephone
A hollerin' hey hey mama can your daddy come home
I'm living fast and dangerously
But I've got plenty of company
When the moon comes up and the sun goes down
That's when I wanna see the lights of town
Cause I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop...
[ guitar ]
It takes a purty little gal and a jug of wine
That's what it takes to make a honky tonk mind
With the jukebox whinin' a honky tonk sound
That's when I want to lay my money down
Cause I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop...
But when my money's all gone I'm on the telephone
A hollerin' hey hey mama can your daddy come home

PARTNERS IN RHYME
(Bobby Fisher)
« © '79 April Music, ASCAP »
Partners in rhyme it would be a crime
If we had never got to sing together
Partners in rhyme singin' every line
Well maybe we could teach the world to sing some harmony
The song of life would not be right without a melody
Hey I don't think no one would mind if we're not right on key
Just sing it from the soul and soon your cares will leave your mind
Just good ole friends until the end we're partners in rhyme
Partners in rhyme it would be a crime...
[ piano ]
Let's pretend that life's a never ending symphony
And ever day's a song to sing and singin' sets you free
The world can sometimes get you down and seem so out of time
That's when you need someone who'll be your partner in rhyme
Partners in rhyme it would be a crime...
Partners in rhyme it would be a crime...

HOLDING THE BAG
(Buck Moore - Pat Bunch)
« © '79 Screen Gems Music, BMI »
You always leave me holding the bag
Don't you know it's gettin' purty heavy to drag
You think it's funny but it ain't no gag
How come you always leave me holding the bag
Remember out in Austin that time that we got tight
You told that ole boy that I wanted to fight
Now Moe you know I really thought a that you could win
And I didn't see no sense in me a steppin' in
You almost got me killed when you started to brag
And that's when you ran off and left me holding the bag
You always leave me holding the bag...
Remember back in Nashville when we picked up them two
The ole ugly one for me and the purty one for you
Well Joe I bought the gas and it was my car
And I got stuck for all the beer at the bar
Yeah you were up front a playin' lover's tag
While I was in the back seat just a holdin' the bag
You always leave me holding the bag...
Remember when I needed your alibi
My wife called you up and you didn't lie
Now that's not as bad as when you had me to drive
And I ended up with that DWI
Now after all we've done it's a wonder we're friends
But ole Pal you know we'd do it again
You always leave me holding the bag...
You always leave me holding the bag...

BYE BYE LOVE
(Boudleaux Bryant - Felice Bryant)
« © '57 House Of Bryant, BMI »
Bye bye love bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness I think I'm gonna cry
Bye bye love bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love goodbye
There goes my baby with someone new
She sure looks happy I sure am blue
She was my baby till you stepped in
Goodbye to romance that might have been
Bye bye love bye bye happiness...
Well I'm through with romance I'm through with love
I'm through with counting the stars above
And here's the reason that I'm so free
My loving baby is through with me
Bye bye love bye bye happiness...
Bye bye my love goodbye
Bye bye my love goodbye
Bye bye my love goodbye

ONLY THE NAMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED
(Harlan Howard - Dorris Shaaf)
« © '79 Screen Gems Music, BMI »
Sally loves Ronnie and Brenda loves Bill
Bill still worships Sally and he always will
Ole Ronnie left Dorothy and Margie left Hank
To marry Bob Gibson who works at the bank
And only the names have been changed
Only the names have been changed
Do-si-do swap your partner's the name of the game
And only the names have been changed
It sure gets confusing it seems very strange
To see Ted with Alice what happened to Jane
Janice dropped Jim and she ran off with Ray
Ray found a cute little barmaid named Kay
And only the names have been changed...
It's a restless ole world everyone's on the move
It's so hard to keep a good love in the groove
I spent weeks consoling my best buddy Jim
Then last week my woman she ran off with him
Now my heart is broken it may never mend
I'm missing my woman and also my friend
I can't seem to find me a woman that's free
But George's ole lady sure looks good to me
And only the names have been changed...
Do-si-do swap your partner's the name of the game
And only the names have been changed

WHEN IT COMES TO COWGIRLS (WE JUST CAN'T SAY NO)
(Jerry Abbott - Patty Jackson)
« © '79 Country Mansion Music, BMI / Mullet Music, BMI »
What makes me fall in love with every cowgirl that I meet
Well them tight levis and big blue eyes just knock me off of my feet
Well I can bust the toughest bronc in any rodeo
But when it comes to cowgirls we just can't say no
When it comes to cowgirls we just can't say no
We love to watch them wiggle when they do the Cotton Eyed Joe
I know they'll be the death of me but what a way to go
When it comes to cowgirls we just can't say no
Cowgirls make you feel so good when they hold you tight
Nothin' takes the place of their love on a lonely nights
Well I can boss the meanest bull in any rodeo
But when it comes to cowgirls we just can't say no
When it comes to cowgirls we just can't say no...
When it comes to cowgirls we just can't say no

THANK GOODNESS IT'S FRIDAY
(Ansley Fleetwood)
« © '79 Brandwood Music, BMI / Mullet Music, BMI »
Well it's Friday afternoon and the sun's goin' down let's punch up a beer drinkin' song
This ole a honky tonk is where I'm gonna be I'll be a roarin' here all night long
Well I've been paid for hard week's work now I'm ready to blow off some steam
Thank goodness it's Friday but we'd be dead if it came more than once a week
I got my pickup full of gas and a cooler full of beer and a half pint under the seat
Got my levi jacket and my best blue jeans and a darlin' snuggled up to me
Some think it's wrong to boogie woogie all night long
But I know that's how tonight's gonna be
Thank goodness it's Friday but we'd be dead if it came more than once a week
[ piano - steel ]
Yeah the sun's goin' down and the moon's comin' out it's gonna be a hell raisin' night
There'll be some dancin' and singin' and lovin' and drinkin' at least one real good fight
This honky tonk sure ain't a fancy place but stick around there'll be a plenty to see
Thank goodness it's Friday but we'd be dead if it came more than once a week
I got my pickup full of gas and a cooler full of beer...
Thank goodness it's Friday but we'd be dead if it came more than once a week
