I CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER
(Bill Anderson - Buddy Killen)
« © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI »
I can't take any longer baby I mean I can't wait any longer
Mhm I gotta have you I gotta know how it is to touch you
To hold you to feel you our lives have touched our minds have touched
And I can't wait any longer for our boddies to touch our souls to touch
I can't wait any longer this feelin's gettin' stronger
Satisfy my hunger you're the only one who can
Where do I have to go what do I have to do
Who do I have to lie to so I can lie with you I can't wait any longer
[ strings ]
Patience has never been one of my virtues baby
When I want something I want it now
And I want you now I wanna kiss you now I wanna love you now
I can't wait any longer...
(I can't wait I can't wait doo doo doo) baby I can't wait any longer
I want you now hmm now yeah (I can't wait I can't wait...)

HOW MARRIED ARE YOU MARY ANN
(Bill Anderson)
« © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI »
When I first saw you I saw something I hadn't seen in a long long time
I saw a lady who looked like a woman who could drive me right out of my mind
But I also saw your diamond and your golden wedding band
I know you're married but I've gotta ask you how married are you Mary Ann
Are you so married that you can't see me looking at you with hungry eyes
Are you so married that you'd deny me just one night in paradise
I wanna hold you I wanna kiss you I wanna love you all I can
I know you're married but I've gotta ask you how married are you Mary Ann
How married are you Mary Ann how much of a chance do I stand
On a scale of one to ten how married are you Mary Ann
[ guitar ]
Surely surely you can see me trembling trembling to hold you tight
I'm not talking about forever I'm just talking about tonight
I wanna touch you I wanna watch you slip that diamond off of your hand
I know youy're married but I've gotta ask you how married are you Mary Ann
How married are you Mary Ann...
How married are you Mary Ann

SMOOTH SOUTHERN HIGHWAY
(Curly Putman - Sonny Throckmorton)
« © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI »
My roads have been rocky and the women's been rough
I woke up this morning and I'd just had enough
When I get to her sweet arms I won't feel alone
She's a smooth southern highway that's takin' me home
She don't have no mountain that I cannot climb
She don't want to own me body and mind
Her roads are not winding like some I've been on
She's a smooth southern highway that's takin' me home
Smooth smooth southern highway smooth and going down my way
When I get to her sweet arms I won't feel alone
She's a smooth southern highway that's takin' me home
Smooth smooth southern highway

ALL THAT KEEPS ME GOIN'
(Bill Anderson)
« © '74 Tree Publishing, BMI »
All that keeps me goin'
Is knowin' that you love me and you're mine
All that keeps me goin'
Is knowin' you're gonna see me through troubled times
This morning when I woke up that ole sun didn't wanna shine
So I just laid back and let your mem'ry fell down across my mind
And suddenly it was yesterday and I was lying in your arms
And somehow just the thought of you turned my world on and made me warm
All that keeps me goin'...
All that keeps me goin'...

JOANNA
(Bill Anderson)
« © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI »
When I'm like a leaf in the wind you're an oak tree beside me
Lifting your branches to make sure I don't blow away
And when I'm like a rolling stone you're the Rock of Gibraltar
Steadfast and mighty and I ask myself every day
What did I ever do to deserve you Joanna
The warmth of your sweet lips the touch of your hand
What did I ever do to deserve your sweet loving
You took a baby and made him a man
What did I ever do to deserve you Joanna
[ dobro ]
I wonder where I'd be right now if you hadn't found me
Asleep in a bunk gutter stoned nearly out of my mind
Instead I wake up every day to my own private rainbow
Wrapped in your sweet love askin' myself one more time
What did I ever do...
What did I ever do to deserve you Joanna

RIDE OFF IN THE SUNSET
(Bobby Braddock - Curly Putman)
« © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI »
There was justice in his sixgun there was magic in his name
And I always tried to be him when we played our cwboy games
I stood in line to see him ride across our small town screen
And in my mind's eye I rode with him in every scene
And he would ride off in the sunset
With that friendly western smile
Ride off in the sunset
No goodbyes just so long for awhile
I saw him on a talk show not too many years ago
His voice was kinda shaky and his hair was white as snow
He didn't say goodnight folks just waved his hat up in the air
And I told my young son that's my childhood hero there
He would ride off in the sunset...
I read the evening paper out in my backyard yesterday
It said that he lay dyin' in a rest home in LA
I looked out toward the sunset and I saw a golden screen
And I swear I saw him as he played out his final scene
I saw him ride off in the sunset...

WHISKEY CAN'T SING
(Bill Anderson)
« © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Whiskey can't sing and whiskey can't write
If it could I'd be singin' my song on some big ole stage tonight
I had it all but I lost everything
Here I sit in this honky tonk livin' proof that whiskey can't sing
I was well on my way to bein' the star that I always knew I'd be
All over the hitparade were songs sung and played by me
And I wrote 'em by the dozens I thought my pen never would run dry
Fancy cars and swimmin' pools pretty girls and I was ridin' high
But I guess I started bending my elbow more than I should
I sang a duet with Johnnie Walker Red and I said don't that sound good
Then before I could find a word to rhyme with wine
I was out of my mind all the time
My throat got too wet my pen got too dry and my music died on the vine
Cause whiskey can't sing...

ON HIS WAY DOWN TO THE RIVER
(Bobby Braddock)
« © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI »
He stopped at Fifth on Broad near where the Opry used to be
For one last tiny thought of singing there in '53
He walked into a pawnshop with a ring of gold and watch of silver
Then he continued east on Broad Street on his way down to the river
He stopped at 3rd on Broad dropped his envelope in a mailbox
A hundred bucks from Maud his old friend from the Broadway nightspot
The world had passed him by and he had nothing more to give her
So he continued east on Broad Street on his way down to the river
He stopped at First on Broad he saw the barges and the bridge
A ship was comin' in and he thought Lord mine never did
Some say it was on purpose while some others beg to differ
They say he slipped and fell on his way down to the river

SUMMER SUN
(Bill Anderson)
« © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI »
On the last day of Christmas I start thinking about the summer son
The beauty of the roses the sweet song of the robin
The warmth of the yellow summer sun
And the two of us together running through the meadow
Laughing making mem'ries having fun
It's a long way back to winter and the plane that came from Denver
Bringin' you to spend the summer son with your daddy to spent the summer son
This year we're gonna catch that big ole fish we saw swimming through the stream
We'll fly your kite and ride your bike maybe camp out overnight
And I'll take you to a Big League baseball game
And hopefully we'll have some time to talk about what's on your mind
And maybe I can even help you some
For I was once a boy your age and you're goin' through that special stage
Where you need your dad a lot this summer son
And I'll be there just like the summer sun
Like so many single fathers I live just to see the summer sun
Just being with my little man helpin' you to understand
Who you are and what you can become
Broken homes aren't easy but think about it this way
You've got two homes where you've loved instead of one
So be a good boy don't you cry and tell your mama I said hi
I can't hardly wait for the summer son oh it's gonna be a wonderful summer son

I WONDER IF GOD LIKES COUNTRY MUSIC
(Orville Couch - Bobbie Jean Carroll)
« © '78 Touchdown Music, BMI »
[ with Roy Acuff ]
We were tunin' up to play a gig just another one night stand
I looked over my guitar and there stood an old man
His cowboy clothes were frayed and worn and his boots were far from new
He said I'd like to sit in with your band I'm a country singer too
Well we just had a big laugh
And when I looked back at the old man there was a tear in his eye
I told the band to cool it I didn't wanna see him cry
He reached down and he took my guitar with a determined look on his face
But as he started to play and sing a look of sadness took its place
He said I've sang my songs from Maine to California
Seen the world through the window of a car
I never saved a dime back when I made it
I always thought someday I'd be a star
But now my voice is cracked and no one wants me
My wife gave upon me years ago
It's been so long my kids don't even know me
Pickin' and singin' is the only life I know
And then he said
I wonder if God likes country music
Will there be a place up there to sing my songs
Will he make my fingers nimble like they used to be
So I can play the chords and sing along
I just stood there none of us really knew what to say
He took my guitar and he put it down ever so gently
And then as he started to turn and leave
The band stood up and applauded
And I can still hear his words today
He said
I wonder if God likes country music...
