Pop Hits From the Country Side rounds up a dozen country songs that also found favor with the pop audience, as interpreted by the king of crossover music, Eddy Arnold. The twist is that the songs are presented in a "completely pop context," to quote the liner notes, and the album sounds a lot like those made by pop vocalists John Gary and Al Martino when they tackled similar material. Arnold's versions of pop-oriented country songs like "I Fall to Pieces" and "Four Walls" are even more languid than the originals, with lush orchestral arrangements that contrast with Arnold's homey baritone. The album was a departure for Arnold in that it was recorded in New York instead of Nashville and cleaves to its pure pop concept. Rosemary Clooney did this sort of thing over a decade earlier with "Half As Much," so Pop Hits From the Country Side can hardly be considered a groundbreaker, even though it was an experiment of sorts for Eddy Arnold.

I CAN'T HELP IT (IF I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU)
(Hank Williams)
« © '51 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
(I can't help it if I'm still in love with you)

Today I passed you on the street and my heart fell at your feet
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
Somebody else stood by your side and he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

A picture from the past came slowly stealing
As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you
Then suddenly I got that old time feeling
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

(Somebody else stood by your side and he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you)

It's hard to know another's lips will kiss you
And hold you just the way I used to do
Oh heaven only knows how much I miss you
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

FADED LOVE
(Bob Wills - John Wills)
« © '51 Anne Rachel Music, ASCAP »
As I look at the letters that you wrote to me
It's you that I'm thinking of
As I read the lines that to me were so sweet
I remember our faded love

I miss you darling more and more every day
As heaven would miss the stars above
With every heartbeat I still think of you
And remeber our faded love

I may think of the past and all the pleasures we had
As I watch the mating of the dove
It was in the springtime that you said goodbye
I remember our faded love

(I miss you darling more and more every day
As heaven would miss the stars above)
With every heartbeat I still think of you
And remeber our faded love
And remeber our faded love

TENNESSEE WALTZ
(Pee Wee King - Redd Stewart)
« © '48 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I was waltzing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz
When an old friend I happened to see
I untroduced him to my loved one and while they were waltzing
My friend stole my sweetheart from me

I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Now I know just how much I have lost
Yes I lost my little darling the night they were playing
The beautiful Tennessee Waltz

(I remember the night...

OH LONESOME ME
(Don Gibson)
« © '58 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
Everybody's going out and having fun
I'm just a fool for staying home and having none
I can't get over how she set set me free oh lonesome me

A bad mistake I'm making by just hanging round
I know that I should have some fun and paint the town
A lovesick fool is blind and just can't see oh lonesome me

I'll bet she's not like me she's out and fancy free
Flirting with the boys with all her charms
But I still love her so and brother don't you know
I'd welcome her right back here in my arms

Well there must be some way I can lose these lonesome blues
Forget about the past and find somebody new
I've thought of everything from A to Z
Oh lonesome me
[ strings - guitar ] Well there must be some way I can lose...
Oh lonesome me

I FALL TO PIECES
(Harlan Howard - Hank Cochran)
« © '60 Tree Publishing, BMI »
I fall to pieces each time I see you again
I fall to pieces how can I be just your friend
You want me to act like we've never kissed
You want me to forget pretend we've never met
And I've tried and I've tried but I haven't yet
You walk by and I fall to pieces

(I fall to pieces) each time someone speaks your name
(I fall to pieces) time only adds to the flame
You tell me to find someone else to love
Someone who'll love me too the way you used to do
But each time I go out with someone new
You walk by and I fall to pieces

HALF AS MUCH
(Curley Williams)
« © '51 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
If you loved me half as much as I love you
You wouldn't worry me half as much as you do
You're nice to me when there's no one else around
You only build me up to let me down

If you missed me half as much as I miss you
You wouldn't stay away half as much as you do
I know that I would never be this blue
If you only loved me half as much as I love you
[ strings ] You're nice to me when there's no one else around
You only build me up to let me down

If you missed me half as much as I miss you...
If you only loved me half as much as I love you

GONE
(Smokey Rodgers)
« © '52 Dallas Music, BMI »
(Now you've gone now you've gone)
Since you've gone the moon the sun the stars in the sky
Know the reason why I cry
Love divine once was mine now you've gone

Since you've gone my heart my lips my tear dimmed eyes
A lonely soul within me cries
I acted smart broke your heart now you've gone
Oh what I'd give for the lifetime I've wasted
The love that I've tasted I was wrong now you've wrong

(Now you've gone now you've gone...
Since you've gone my heart...
(Now you've gone) now you've gone

END OF THE WORLD
(Arthur Kent - Sylvia Dee)
« © '62 Edward Proffitt Music, ASCAP / Music Sales, ASCAP »
Why does the sun go on shining why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world cause you don't love me anymore

Why do the birds go on singing why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world it ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand no I can't understand how life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world it ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating...

TILL I WALTZ AGAIN WITH YOU
(Sidney Prosen)
« © '61 Anne Rachel Music, ASCAP »
Till I waltz again with you don't let no other hold your charms
If my dreams should all come true you'll be waiting for my arms
Till I kiss you once again keep my love locked in your heart
Darlin' I'll return and then we will never have to part

Though it may break your heart and mine the minute when it's time to go
Remember dear each word divine that meant I love you so
Till I waltz again with you just the way we are tonight
I will keep my promise true for you are my guiding light
[ strings ] Though it may break your heart...

LONELY STREET
(Carl Belew - W.S. Stevenson - Kenny Sowder)
« © '56 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I'm looking for that Lonely Street I've got a sad sad tale to tell
I need a place to go and weep where's this place called Lonely Street
A place where there's just loneliness where dim lights bring forgetfulness
Where broken dreams and mem'ries meet where's this place called Lonely Street

Perhaps upon that Lonely Street there's someone such as I
Who came to bury broken dreams and watch an old love die
If I could find that Lonely Street where dim lights bring forgetfulness
Where broken dreams and mem'ries meet where's this place called Lonely Street
Where's this place called Lonely Street

FOUR WALLS
(George Campbell - Marvin Moore)
« © '57 Unart Catalog, BMI »
(Four walls too near me closing in on me)

Out where the bright lights are glowing
You're drawn like a moth to a flame
You laugh while the wine's overflowing
While I sit and whisper your name

Four walls to hear me four walls to see
Four walls too near me closing in on me

Sometimes I ask why I'm waiting
But my walls have nothing to say
I'm made for love not for waiting
But here where you left me I'll stay

Four walls to hear me...

One night with you is like heaven
And so while I'm walking the floor
I listen for steps in the hallway
And wait for your knock on my door

Four walls to hear me...
Closing in on me

YOUR CHEATIN' HEART
(Hank Williams)
« © '52 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
(Your cheating heart will tell on you)

Your cheating heart will make you weep you'll cry and cry and try to sleep
But sleep won't come the whole night through your cheating heart will tell on you

When tears come down like falling rain you'll toss around and call my name
You'll walk the floor the way I do your cheating heart will tell on you

(Your cheating heart) will pine someday and crave the love you threw away
The time will come when you'll be blue your cheating heart will tell on you

When tears come down like falling rain...
Your cheating heart will tell on you
