TIME'S A GETTIN' HARD

(Red Hayes)
« © '63 Warden Music, BMI »
Time's a gettin' hard boys money's gettin' scarce
Times don't get no better boys gonna leave this place

Take my true love by her hand lead her through the town
Say goodbye to everyone goodbye to everyone

Had a joy a year ago had a little home
Now I've got no place to go guess I'll have to roam

Take my true love by her hand...

Every wind that blows boys every wind that blows
Carries me to some new place heaven only knows

Take my true love by her hand...
[ choir ] Take my true love by her hand...

YOUNG LAND

(Jerry Fuller)
« © '63 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
Have you heard there's a place called the Young Land
Where a kiss is worth more than pure gold
Lovers walkin' in hand in search of this land
Where true love will never grow old

Ask me how do I know of the Young Land
Well now I've had a love of my own
But she left me one day now I can't find my way
So I'll search for the Young Land alone

Lovers who seek soon find
That the Young Land's a state of mind

Take a word from the wise and be careful
To be sure and love all you can
Where the love you can share you will find everywhere
Everywhere in the world is a Young Land
Everywhere in the world is a Young Land

GREEN GREEN

(Randy Sparks - Barry McGuire - Encino Mandalay)
« © '63 New Christy Music, BMI »
Green green it's green they say on the farside of the hill
Green green I'm going away to where the grass is greener still

Well I told my mama on the day I was born
Don't you cry when you see I'm gone
You know there ain't no woman gonna settle me down
I just gotta be travelin' on

Green green it's green they say...

Oh there ain't nobody in this whole wide world
Gonna tell me how to spend my time
I'm just a good lovin' ramblin' man
Say buddy could you spare me a dime

Green green it's green they say...

Well I don't care when the sun goes down
Where I can lay my weary head
Green green valley or rocky road
It's where I'm gonna make my bed

Green green it's green they say...

To where the grass is greener still
To where the grass is greener still

MOLLY

(Steve Karliski)
« © '62 Screen Gems Music, BMI »
The war began and Henry left his farm
Left his darling Molly with a baby in her arms
Now the war was over and their life could begin
Molly saw her darling standing at the door again

It's so nice to hear your voice again Molly
So nice to feel your arms around me Molly
Oh how happy I'd be if I only could see you
Sweet sweet Molly please don't cry

Maybe I should have written to let you know ahead a time
But I was afraid that you'd worry if you knew that I'd gone blind
Do I hear you crying Molly please don't cry you silly thing
See what you've done you've even brought a tear into my eye

Oh how happy I'd be if I only could see you
Sweet sweet Molly please don't cry

Where's my son why does he looks like Molly
Everybody says he took after me Lord I wish I could see
Come here little man don't be afraid I'm your daddy
Guess he'll get used to me in time won't he Molly

It's so nice to hear your voice again Molly...
Please don't cry

GOTTA TRAVEL ON

(Paul Clayton)
« © '60 Sanga Music, BMI »
I've laid around and played around this old town too long
Summer's almost gone yes winter's comin' on
I've laid around and played around this old town too long
And I feel like I've gotta travel on

Papa writes to Johnny but Johnny can't come home
Johnny can't come home no Johnny can't come home
Papa writes to Johnny but Johnny can't come home
Cause he's been on this chain gang too long

I've laid around and played around...

High sheriff and police ridin' after me
Ridin' after me yes they're comin' after me
High sheriff and police ridin' after me
And I feel like I've gotta travel on

Want to see my honey want to see her bad
Want to see her bad oh want to see her bad
Want to see my honey want to see her bad
She's the best gal this poor boy ever had

I've laid around and played around...
And I feel like I've gotta travel on

SONG OF THE COO COO

(Bill Faier)
« © '63 Davidson County Music, BMI » »
Who will get a song of the coo coo who will get a bark of the dog
Who will see the stars who will point to Mars who will taste the smell of the fog
Who will pick the strings of the banjo who will feel the heat of the sun
Who will whisper words like I love you when this old world is gone

I've built me a house in the country beside it I plant me a vine
How long it grows God only knows will I be around to see it climb
But if I should marry my darling and my darling gives me a son
Will he get a song of the coo coo before this world is done

Who can answer these questions who knows the facts of the case
There is a man answers in his hand in your mirror you can see his face
This world is ours for the taking or this world will soon burn away
And in you and I and the coo coo we will have had our day

POOR HOWARD

(Harlan Howard)
« © '63 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Poor Howard's dead and gone let me hear to sing this song
Poor Howard's dead and gone let me hear to sing this song

Poor Howard had a wife and she nagged him all his life
So he used his busher knife like I said he had a wife

But poor Howard's dead and gone...

They took poor Howard off to jail they wouldn't let me go his bail
Said poor Howard is your friend buy a lilly for his hand

Poor Howard's dead and gone...
[ ac.guitar ] When he laid his bones to rest we fullfilled his last request
He said buddies bury me far from her as I can be

Now poor Howard's dead and gone...

His last words were friends goodbye don't you worry don't you cry
I don't mind this a gettin' hung at least I stopped her naggin' tongue

Now poor Howard's dead and gone...

BLOWIN' IN THE WIND

(Bob Dylan)
« © '63 Special Rider Music, SESAC »
How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man
Yes and how many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand
How many times must a cannonballs fly before they're forever banned
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind the answer is blowin' in the wind

How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky
Yes and how many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry
How many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind the answer is blowin' in the wind
[ ac.guitar ] How many years can a mountain exist before it's washed to the sea
Yes and how many years can some people exist before they're allowed to be free
How many times can a man turn his head pretending he just doesn't see
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind the answer is blowin' in the wind

JEFF CANADY

(Danny Dill)
« © '63 Central Songs, BMI »
Hurry hurry children you better get a runnin'
Jeff Canady's comin' and he eats little youngin's
His wife is a witch and Jeff can switch
From a snake To a frog or an old mad dog
So you better leave him alone

My sister was a backward child she never walked a step
She crawled around the old home place and always needed help
At eight years old she never walked and never went to school
The teacher said she couldn't help she'd grow to be a fool

We took her to a fine surgeon he said dear folks I dread
The body's strong but her mind won't go it's something in her head
Now there was a bum who walked around way back in those days
And momma would say we'd better be good or he'd take us kids away

Hurry hurry children you better get a runnin'...

We sheltered Sis from snakes and frogs and when the mad dogs came
But the one thing that she feared the most was old Jeff Canady's name
One day old Jeff came down the road when sister played alone
She screamed and squirmed and then decided she was there alone

She jumped and ran to momma's arms as Jeff went on his way
But thank the Lord my sister walks until this very day
Guess old Jeff is walking yet down heavens lonesome mile
But beneath his beard I swear I bet he wears a great big smile

Hurry hurry children you better get a runnin'...

Where have all the young girls gone long time passing
Where have all the young girls gone long time ago
Where have all the young girls gone they've taken husbands everyone

FOLK SINGER

(Merle Kilgore)
« © '63 Painted Desert Music, BMI »
He used to sing his songs to his Sara Jane the folk singer
His songs filled with love made the mountains ring the folk singer
At first Sara Jane was to be his bride
But as his fame grew she was pushed aside
Sweet mountain girl would say goodbye to the folk singer

He let his hair grown long and he dressed in style the folk singer
His voice was pure and the fans went wild for the folk singer
He said Sara Jane was much too plain
So he left her alone as he gained more fame
But sorrow will come like the mountain rain to the folk singer
[ ac.guitar ] Lavished in glory fortune at his feet the folk singer
Awoke one morning and he could not speak the folk singer
The doctors said his singing days were through
Thousands wept Sara Jane did too
He couldn't sing now his friends were few the folk singer

Sick at heart in the mountains again the folk singer
Now Sara Jane didn't look so plain to the folk singer
Ah the power of love can do strange things
Cause love has made him sing again
Now he sings for his Sara Jane the folk singer

And once again the mountains ring to the folk singer the folk singer
The folk singer the folk singer

COTTON FIELDS

(Huddie Ledbetter)
« © '61 Folkways Music, BMI »
When I was a little bitty baby
My mama would rock me in the cradle
In them old cottonfields back home

When I was a little bitty baby...

Oh when them cotton bowls get rotten
You couldn't pick very much cotton
In them old cottonfields back home

It was down in Louisiana
Just about a mile from Texarkana
In them old cottonfields back home

It may sound a little bit funny
But you dind't make very much money
In them old cottonfields back home

It may sound a little bit funny...
Oh when them cotton bowls get rotten...
[ banjo ] When I was a little bitty baby...
Oh when them cotton bowls get rotten...
