lp discography - covers & lyrics

Opening with the driving title track, 40 Hour Week encapsulates why Alabama was the top country group of the '80s. Alternating between restrained rockers and well-crafted ballads, it captures the band at its peak. Nevertheless, it isn't quite as strong as their first albums — the performances and production are a bit too mannered — but its professionalism is appealing. And that professionalism made 40 Hour Week the group's most popular album, as it crossed over into the pop Top Ten.

FORTY HOUR WEEK (FOR A LIVIN')

(Don Schlitz - Dave Loggins - Lisa Silver)
« © '84 Don Schlitz Music, ASCAP »
There are people in this country who work hard everyday
Not for fame or fortune do they strive
But the fruits of their labor are worth more than their paid
And it's time a few of them were recognized

Hello Detroit auto worker let me thank you for your time
You work a forty hour week for a livin' just to send it on down the line
Hello Pittsburgh steel mill worker let me thank you for your time
You work a forty hour week for a livin' just to send it on down the line

This is for the one who swings the hammer drivin' home the nail
For the one behind the counter ringin' up the sales
For the one who fights the fire and for the one who brings the mail
For everyone who works behind the scenes

You can see them every morning in the factories and the fields
In the city streets and the quiet country towns
Working together like spokes inside a wheel
They keep this country turning around

Hello Kansas wheatfield farmer let me thank you for your time
You work a forty hour week for a livin' just to send it on down the line
Hello West Virginia coal miner let me thank you for your time
You work a forty hour week for a livin' just to send it on down the line

This is for the one who drives the big rig up and down the road
For the one out in the warehouse bringin' in the load
For the waitress the mechanic the policeman on patrol
For everyone who works behind the scenes
With a spirit you can't replace with no machine
Hello America let me thank you for your time

CAN'T KEEP A GOOD MAN DOWN

(Bob Corbin)
« © '84 Bro'n Sis Music, BMI »
I thought it was forever I thought it would last
Gotta try to make it a page of my past
You didn't even say goodbye when you slammed that door
I'm lyin' here alone in what once was our bed
Tryin' to forget all the cruel words you said
While the radio's playing what once was our favorite song
Oh enough is enough I won't take anymore
I'm picking myself up off the floor

Cause you can't keep a good man down can't keep a good man down
Oh no can't keep a good man down baby you can't keep a good man down

Gonna dress up in the finest clothes that I own
And take it to the street I won't be lonely for long
Gonna put all my best moves on every single woman I see
Thought you could break me and add me to your list
Notch me on your gun well let me tell you this
I got news for you baby I don't break that easily

Cause you can't keep a good man down...

I'll be out there on the scene hanging with my friends
This world's gonna see me smiling again
I'm taking some time to erase you from my memory
Don't write me any letters don't call me on the phone
Don't knock upon my door cause to you I'm not home
I know there's a woman out there for a man like me

Cause you can't keep a good man down...

Oh enough is enough I won't take anymore
I'm picking myself up off the floor

Cause you can't keep a good man down...
Can't keep a good man down can't keep a good man down
Can't keep a good man down can't keep a good man down

THERE'S NO WAY

(Lisa Palas - Will Robinson - John Jarrard)
« © '84 Cross Keys Publishing, ASCAP »
As I lay by your side and hold you tonight I want you to understand
This love that I feel is so right and so real I realize how lucky I am
And should you ever wonder if my love is true
There's something that I want to make clear to you

There's no way I could make it without you
There's no way that I'd even try
If I had to survive without you in my life
I know I wouldn't last a day oh babe there's no way

Baby I'll always love you and I hope you love me

It means so much of the wherever I see that wantin' me look in your eyes
And I don't know how I could do without holding you close every night
I've waited so long just to have you to hold
And now that I've got you I'll never let go

There's no way I could make it without you...

I never knew until you what I was missing
Now you say forever I find my heart is listening
Yes I'm listening

There's no way I could make it without you...

DOWN ON LONGBOAT KEY

(Dennis Morgan - Steve Davis)
« © '84 Sixteen Stars Music, BMI »
She sits and stares out the window at the water
Every night down the cafe
All alone she sips her pina colada
Talking to herself dreaming time away
The story is that a dark haired sailor
Stole her heart many years ago
He promised her he'd come back and take her
Around the world bring her hills of gold

Down on longboat key
Where the island sand meet in the Gulf stream breeze
Down on longboat key
She spends her life in a dream on long boat key
Down on longboat key dn on longboat key

Each afternoon as the snugboat comes in
She runs to meet them down that pier
She sees the fisherman's nets and the sunset
But she don't see him her eyes fill with tears
She stands there looking at the crystal blue water
And in the Coral she imagine pearls
She makes believe he brought them all the way from China
Then the water swirls the blue green water swirls

Down on longboat key...

Young sailors makes a play to take her home
She says no I'm already taken
Oh they just laugh when she mentions his name
She keeps on waiting waiting waiting waiting

Down on longboat key...

LOUISIANA MOON

(Larry Shell - Dan Mitchell)
« © '85 Screen Gems Music, BMI »
There's a full moon rising comin' up behind them cypress trees
Betty Jo ain't wearin' nothing round her body but a cool night breeze
Her daddy warned me boy don't come round here no more
But here I am knockin' on sweet Betty's door

Louisiana moon done cast it's spell on me yeah
Louisiana moon makes a man do crazy things

We slipped off to a place in the swamp where nobody goes
Down by the water where the snakes and the alligators play
Nobody follows cause there's evil in there
I ain't scared of nothing when I'm holdin' Betty tight

Louisiana moon...

I can't stay away cause I love the thrill
If the gator's don't get me her daddy will

Louisiana moon...
Louisiana moon...
Louisiana moon...

I WANT TO KNOW YOU BEFORE WE MAKE LOVE

(Becky Hobbs - Candy Parton)
« © '84 Irving Music, BMI »
Sometimes all you need is someone to hold you
Sometimes that's all you're looking for
But I'd like to take the time to get to know you
Cause I don't want this time to be like all the times before

I want to know you before I make love to you
I want to show you all of my heart
And when I look into those eyes I want to feel the love inside you
I want to know you before we make love

I've learned from all those lonely nights with strangers
It takes time for real love to be found
I feel the invitation of your body
But I'd like to look inside your soul before I lay you down

I want to know you before we make love to you...

If we take it slow together we might make it last forever

I want to know you before we make love to you...
I want to know you before we make before we make love

FIREWORKS

(Ronny Scaife - Phil Thomas - Kenny Durham)
« © '84 Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
Once I was cold but now I know how a fire works
I felt the flame it drove me insane fireworks
There was this lady soft as a gentle glow
She told me everything that she knows
About fireworks she's got fireworks

Now on the Fourth of July by the riverside there was fireworks
And by her dark green eyes I was hynotised by her fireworks
She lit a fuse in the dark of the night then I got off like dynamite
On her fireworks she's got fireworks

A million colors shootin' cross the sky
Moment any man could fantasize
Ah fireworks she's got fireworks
[ guitar ] Now I'm meetin' her here but she's disappeared and took her fireworks
She burning up someone with her fever and fun and her fireworks
Some lucky man is gonna need her so
And when he does I know he's gonna know
Her fireworks she's got fireworks fireworks
A candle burning at both ends
Fireworks hotbed of coal fireworks fireworks
Fire fire fire fire fireworks
Fireworks hot as coal fireworks fireworks

AS RIGHT NOW

(Teddy Gentry - Greg Fowler)
« © '84 Tree Publishing, BMI »
You're still the lady of my dreams
You're still my high school beauty queen
To me it's still magic when we touch
And I have never loved you so much
As right now as right now

You're still my actress on the screen
Still the leadin' lady in my scenes
To me it's still magic when we touch
And I've still never loved someone so much
As right now as right now as right now

You're still the one I'm with when I'm alone
And you're still the lover calling on my phone
To me it's still magic when we touch
And I will never love someone so much
As right now as right now as right now as right now
As right now as right now as right now

IF IT AIN'T DIXIE (IT WON'T DO)

(Kent M. Robbins - John Jarrard)
« © '85 Irving Music, BMI »
Oh I love those Colorado Rockies and that big starry Montana sky
And the lights of San Francisco on a California night
Enjoyed those ballgames in Chicago on those windy afternoons
It's a big beautiful country but I'm never home too soon
If it ain't Dixie it won't do

If it ain't Dixie it don't feel quite like home
My southern blood runs deep and true
I've had good times north of the line
I've got a lot of good friends too
But if it ain't Dixie it won't do it won't do
[ guitar ] When the leaves turn in New England I love the chill that's in the air
I've walked the New York City sidewalks had a big time in Times Square
But now my wheels are rollin' southward and heaven's comin' into view
Home sweet home is Alabama that's what I look forward to

If it ain't Dixie it don't feel quite like home...
If it ain't Dixie oh no oh no ooh
[ guitar ] Now my wheels are rollin' southward and heaven's comin' into view
Home sweet home is Alabama that's what I look forward to

If it ain't Dixie it won't do...
