lp discography - covers & lyrics

Curb's The Best of Roy Acuff collects a selection of '60s hits and a number of re-recordings Acuff made in the '60s while signed to Hickory Records, a label he began with his publishing partner Fred Rose. By this point, Acuff's recording career was no longer successful; he concentrated on the Grand Ole Opry. Nevertheless, these re-recordings are entertaining, although they are considerably slicker and less affecting than his early, groundbreaking tracks. As a sampler of Acuff's '60s sound, The Best of is effective.

WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN

(A.P. Carter) « © '35 Peer International, BMI »
I was standing by my window on a cold and cloudy day
When I saw the hearse come rolling to carry mother away
Will the circle be unbroken by and by Lord by and by
There's a better home awaiting in the sky Lord in the sky
[ ac.guitar ] I said to the undertaker undertaker please drive slow
For this lady you are hauling oh I hate to see her go
[ harmonica ] I will follow close behind her try to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow when they laid her in her grave
[ fiddle ] Went back home and home was lonesome since my mather she had gone
Found my brothers sisters crying what a home so sad and lone
Will the circle be unbroken...

WALTZ OF THE WIND

(Fred Rose) « © '57 Milene Music, ASCAP »
You were there in my arms alone in the moonlight
The trees played the waltz of the wind
It was there that I knew I'd love you forever
As we danced to the waltz of the wind
The stars up above you looked down in your eyes
And told me the night would never end
Now I'm dreaming of you till we meet tomorrow
And dance to the waltz of the wind
[ harmonica - fiddle ] The stars up above you...

WRECK ON THE HIGHWAY

(Dorsey Dixon) « © '46 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
Who did you say it was brother who was it fell by the way
When whiskey and blood run together did you hear anyone pray
I didn't hear nobody pray dear brother I didn't hear nobody pray
I heard the crash on the highway but I didn't hear nobody pray

When I heard the crash on the highway I knew what it was from the start
I went to the scene of destruction and the picture was stamped on my hreart
When whiskey and blood ran together mixed with the glass where they lay
Death played her hand in destruction but I didn't hear nobody pray
[ fiddle ] I wish I could change this sad story that I am now telling you
But there is no way I can change it for somebody's life is now through
Their soul has been called by the Master they died in the crash on the way
And I heard the groans of the dying but I didn't hear nobody pray

I didn't hear nobody pray dear brother...

REMEMBER ME (WHEN THE CANDLE LIGHTS ARE GLEAMING)

(Scott Wiseman) « © '46 Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
The sweetest songs belong to lovers in the gloaming
The sweetest days are the days that used to be
The saddest words I ever heard were words of parting
When you said sweetheart remember me
Remember me when the candle lights are gleaming
Remember me at the close of a long long day
It would be so sweet when all alone I'm dreaming
Just to know you still remember me

You told me once that you were mine alone forever
And I was yours till the end of eternity
But all our vows are broken now and we will never
Be the same except in memory
[ dobro ] A brighter face may take my place when we're apart dear
A sweeter smile and a love more bold and free
But in the end fearweather friends may break your heart dear
If they do sweetheart remember me
Remember me when the candle lights...
Just to know you still remember me

BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY

(Bill Monroe) « © '46 Peer International, BMI / Bill Monroe Music, BMI »
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
It was on the moonlight night the stars were shining bright
And they whispered from on high your love has said goodbye
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and said goodbye
[ harmonica - dobro - fiddle ] Blue moon of Kentucky...
Shine on the one that's gone and said goodbye

LIFE'S RAILWAY TO HEAVEN

(M.E. Abbey - Charlie D. Tillman - J.R. Baxter) « © '57 Bridge Building Music, BMI »
Life is like a mountain railroad with an engineer that's brave
We must make the run successful from the cradle to the grave
Watch the curves the hills the tunnels never falter never quail
Keep your hand upon the throttle and your eye upon the rail
Blessed Saviour Thou wilt guide us till we reach that blissful shore
Where the angels wait to join us in God's praise forevermore
[ dobro ] As you roll across the trestle spanning Jordan's swelling tide
You behold the Union Depot into which your train will glide
There'll you meet the superintendent God the father God the son
With the hearty joyous plaudit weary pilgrim welcome home
Blessed Saviour Thou wilt guide us...

OLD TIME SUNSHINE SONG

(Eddy Raven) « © '74 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I wanna hear it again just the way it was back then
When my mama sang to me it was love and harmony
In that old time sunshine song

With the mellowing of years we look back and see the tears
With happy times and ties that made us strong
We all worked in the fields it was love and it was real
Like an old time sunshine song
I wanna hear it again...
[ banjo ] I don't get back much these days since mama passed away
It's still the place I feel that I belong
So I go there in my mind hoping Lord that I might find
That old time sunshine song
I wanna hear it again...
[ harmonica ] I wanna hear it again...
