I'm like a cloud driftin' from town to town
Each new love just helps me on my way
No one woman's ever gonna tie me down
When one gets too close I just back up and say
That I gotta be walkin' on new grass singin' a new song
Tomorrow there's no tellin' where I'll be
But I'll be a walkin' on new grass singin' a new song
The next town up the road keeps a callin' me
I'm warnin' you don't fall in love with me
I don't plan on bein' here too long
You're just a leaf caught in a playful breeze
I'll carry you a while then I'll be movin' on
And I gotta be walkin' on new grass singin' a new song...
[ strings ]
I won't take roots I never stay that long
And a bad seed just won't grow anyway
Yeah this rollin' stone don't wanna gather no moss
So when the grass starts to grow then I'll be on my way
Yes and I'll be a walkin' on new grass singin' a new song...

I'm burning the letters that I've kept from time to time
And I waited to see if she would call
I know that what she's doin's gonna make me lose my mind
But she's gone ahead and done it after all
Yes she's gone ahead and done it after all
The picture that she gave me makes the flame burn high
For I just can't stand to see them on the wall
I told them that she would never listen to his lies
But she's gone ahead and done it after all
Yes she's gone ahead and done it after all
The tears I shed are from the smoke that fills the room
I guess it's best that I forget about that call
I said I'd never cry but if that smoke don't clear out soon
Well I've gone ahead and done it after all
Yes I've gone ahead and done it after all
The flame has just burned out like her love for me
But is that footsteps that I hear down the hall
Now in her arms I know that's where I'll always be
For she said she couldn't do it after all
That her love was just for me after all

Just because I tell you there's nobody like you that don't mean that it's true
And if I should whisper the words I love you that don't mean that I do
I may even kid around about gettin' married if I do pay me no mind
For I'm the kind of guy that will tell you a lie and it don't mean a thing to me
If I buy you pretty things before you accept them make sure you understand
Pretty things like pretty words come easy to me that's part of well made plans
They're just tools of my trade and I know how to use them and I've used them many times
For I'm the kind of guy that will tell you a lie and it don't mean a thing to me
Well when you see me comin' better lock your door pretend you're not at home
And if I should call you do yourself a favor just don't answer your phone
For all my life I've had a motto love 'em leave 'em that's just part of my line
For I'm the kind of guy that will tell you a lie and it don't mean a thing to me
Well it don't mean a thing to me

I want to introduce myself to the ladies
And please don't be discouraged with my size
I'm as big as the last two boys you went with
Uh but twice the love light shinin' in my eyes
I can double date and leave home the other fellow
I don't like that competition hangin' round
So girls it's here for you I'm a pickin' singin' lovin' fool
Welcome to the round mound of sound
Oh welcome to the round mound of sound
I'm overweight but I'm up to date with the biggest heart in town
I can double date and leave home the other fellow...
[ guitar ]
My birthday is May twenty sixth and seventh
When I was born I weighed twenty seven pounds
When the doctor brought me in to see my mama
Eh he said welcome to the round mound of sound
Oh welcome to the round mound of sound...
Oh welcome to the round mound of sound

I know I'm not your first love they're just a past memory
But I'm the one who's got you now and that's all that matters to me
I know other arms have held you but I'm not jealous of these
For mine are the arms that hold you now and that's all that matters to me
I came alive when you came along you brought life back to me
And I don't care what's in your past you're as far as I can see
I know other lips have kissed you I know you've been thrilled and pleased
But mine are the lips that kiss you now and that's all that matters to me
That's all that matters to me that's all that matters to me

I've been down to Mississippi down through New Orleans yes I have
I've played in California and there's not much that I haven't seen no there's not
I'm a ramblin' man a don't fool around with a ramblin' man
I left a girl in West Virginia up there where the green grass grows yes I did
I got a girl in Cincinnati a waitin' where the Ohio River flows poor girl
I'm a ramblin' man a don't give your heart to a ramblin' man
You'd better move away you're standin' too close to the flame
Once I mess with your mind your little heart won't beat the same
I'm a ramblin' man a don't mess around with any ole ramblin' man
[ guitar ]
Well up in Chicago I was known as quite a boy yes I was
Yeah down in Alabama they call me the man of joy haha fat boy
Well I'm a ramblin' man a don't fall in love with a ramblin' man
You'd better move away you're standin' too close to the flame...
Yes I'm a ramblin' man a don't mess around with any ole ramblin' man

I'm gonna smile at ev'ryone I meet today
I'm gonna walk my street so happy they won't believe
I'm gonna dance at the slightest sound of music I hear play
It might sound crazy but that's my goal for today
I'm gonna thank someone for the sun that shines so bright
I'm gonna thank someone for the someone he gave me to hold tonight
I'm gonna dance at the slidest sound of music I hear play
It might sound crazy but that's my goal for today
[ strings ]
I'm gonna thank someone for the sun that shines so bright...

Now I've looked at you ole clock for a long time
And each glance makes a change for the worse
Cause you just keep movin' me towards tomorrow
But I wish you would run in reverse
Twenty four hours ago she said that no one could ever take my place
But ole clock you just proved her a liar it's as plain as the hands on your face
You never stand still for a second and ev'ry movement makes ev'rything old
You're geared just to look at the future ah but my past has a lot more to hold
Maybe if I broke you to pieces it would stop all this pain in my mind
But I need you to break up the silence so I'll just wait until you unwind
If I could just stop your hands ole clock on the wall
Turn you back to yesterday and see her one more time that's all
Then she could leave me then she could leave me

I was down and out as any man could be
Sleeping in a mission they have for guys like me
My shoes for a pillow beneath my head
A cold hard mattress for my bed
I was really feelin' sorry for me
Sitting on the bed next to mine I could see
This poor soul in so much worse shape than me
Yet a smile was on his face he said it's my last night in this place
Then he lit a cigarette and said to me
Oh tomorrow the sun's gonna shine shine shine
And I'm a goin' home to stay this time
Oh how happy my folks will be
It's been so long since they've seen me
Yes tomorrow I'm goin' home for the last time
[ strings ]
I dozed off and not much time could have gone by
Then I woke up to see the flames were ten feet high
He had dropped his cigarette and as the flames engulfed his bed
I recalled the last words I heard him sigh
Oh tomorrow the sun's gonna shine shine shine...
Yes friends tomorrow he's goin' home for the last time

Somebody told Mary Mary had to tell her friends
Jim got to work and he had to tell it over and over again
It's the hottest thing in town how the news must get around
I wanted to be the first to tell you I love you
We've been sittin' in the classroom nine long years or so
And the smile you gave me every day made me wanna know
But someone saw me as I wrote our names side by side
In a heart on my valentine to you
Now ev'ryone knows I guess includin' you
It won't change the way I feel or the things that I do
It's been on my mind so long I'm glad they've spread the news
Now I only hope you'll say I love you too
Somebody told Mary Mary had to tell her friends...

Hopped a freight train outta Nashville rode it up to Ohio
Thumbed my way on to Detroit stayed there for a month or so
Caught a ride into Chicago with a truck drivin' man
Stayed there for the summer singin' with a country band
And ev'ry time I hear a freight train's lonesome whistle blow
I think about the good girl I got a waitin' for me at home
Yonder comes a freight train movin' on down the line
Yonder comes a freight train listen to that engine whine
I'm a gittin' on that ol' train and a goin' back to that good good girl of mine
Freight train
[ guitar ]
Hopped a freight out of Chicago thought that it was southern bound
Ended up in New York City where they travel under ground
Stole a ride on a fruit truck went through Charlotte to LA
I got a ride back to Atlanta liked those towns but couldn't stay
Rode with a couple to Chattanooga goin' to see Ruby Falls
Hundred and thirty eight miles from Nashville I'll get home if I have to crawl
Yonder comes a freight train movin' on down the line...
Yonder comes a freight train movin' on down the line...
