Truck Drivin' Son Of A Gun

Dixie Dean - Robert King

© Southern Arts Music, BMI

I got a cute little gal in every eastern town from Boston to St Louis
There's some that I don't even know but I'm lookin' forward to
Cause I like my women ev'rywhere I go
So roll on big wheels don't you roll so slow

Peggy Ann is a waitin' in Memphis and Betty Lou in Maine
I got a good ole gal in Knoxville but man I forgot her name
But not her figure I remember that
Yeah I'm a kiss stealin' a wheelin' dealin' a truck drivin' son of a gun
[ piano ]
Well there goes Joe flyin' low makin' up his time
But where I sit I don't believe you'd say I'm wastin' mine
I'm movin' faster than a Jimmy-8
If you think I'm losin' time you're runnin' late

I got a steady little baby waitin' back home for me
But there are six more towns to go till I'm back in Tennessee
And six more women at least I know
Yeah I'm a kiss stealin' wheelin' dealin' a truck drivin' son of a gun

Two Six Packs Away

Ronnie Self

© Shelby Singleton Music, BMI

I got on my wheels and I went out on the town draggin'
I hit a big oak tree it looked like a wreck to the wagon
I got a hospital bill and the judge a waitin' for me to pay
I had a sweet little honey just two six packs away

I told the judge there was two trees and I went 'tween 'em
He said from what I hear your condition that's the way that you seen 'em
He laid down that hammer he gave me ninety long days
I had a sweet little honey just two six packs away
[ guitar ]
Well I'm a workin' on a country road but it's sunny weather
It's gonna take awhile to put my wheels back together
Now Sunday rolls around that's my cigarette day
And my baby's still a waitin' just two six packs away

When I get out of this place and don't say I never saw one
Goin' down to Joe's and have that big bartender draw one
For my throat is dry and my mouth feels like pay
And my baby is a waitin' just two six packs away
And my baby is a waitin' just two six packs away
And my baby is a waitin' just two six packs away

Just A Few More Miles

Earl Green - John Green

© Southern Arts Music, BMI

Well I'm all packed up and I'm almost ready to go
This big G-model runs ev'ry way but slow
When I get tired while I'm on the way
Instead of stoppin' I always say
Just a few more miles and I'll rest for a little while

I been a runnin' all night makin' time like I never seen
My sweet baby's waitin' for me back in New Orleans
I saw a sign that said arrive alive
I thought I better stop and let Benny drive
Just a few more miles and I'll rest for a little while

I got a date with an angel gotta make my turn on time
Can't stop to sleep gotta movin' on down the line
For slow movin' traffic it might be best
To notify Fort Worth and all points west
Just a few more miles and I'll rest for a little while
[ guitar ]
I been a runnin' with a Jimmy since I left El Paso
I'm pullin' 44 thousand give or take a pound or so
He tried to pass me like I knew he would
Then he saw that bulldog on my hood
Just a few more miles and I'll rest for a little while

In a few more hours I'll be with my baby again
Ain't had no sleep since I can't remember when
Tonight I'm a gonna paint the town
Tomorrow I'll be San Diego bound
Just a few more miles and I'll rest for a little while
Yeah a few more miles and I'll rest for a little while
Just a few more miles and I'll rest for a little while

Quittin' Time

Glenn Raye

© Careers Music, BMI

Quittin' time quittin' time
Like a big dollar bill a waitin' on a little thin dime
Quittin' time quittin' time
Wanna find my baby by the docks at quittin' time

Well I don't mind workin' I gotta make a dollar to spend
Yeah I'll sure enough to spend it then I'll have to make a dollar again
Don't wanna make a fortune that I'll only have to leave behind
Wanna make an honest livin' drop my trailer off at quittin' time

Quittin' time quittin' time...
[ guitar ]
Yeah the highway's wet and I'm a little bit afraid tonight
Afraid if I ever get a break I'll fold like a switchblade knife
Oh my eyes are heavy but I see the city limit sign
Well Lady Luck is with me cause I'm home and it's quittin' time

Quittin' time quittin' time...

Wanna see my baby at the docks at quittin' time
Wanna find my baby by the docks at quittin' time
Gonna see my baby at the docks at quittin' time

Operation X

Tom T. Hall

© Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI

Well as long as there's a truck I won't forget
Korea and Operation X

I won't forget the year of '54
I drove a truck in that Korean war
Haulin' GI's to the front and back
In a truck they called Duce and a half

The others called it Operation X
We had to move in just an hour or less
First ethanol and maintenance that was all
And there were twenty men I had to haul

That south Keroean sky was smoky black
I was third in convoy from the back
But twenty minutes out they hit the nail
It was mortar they were sendin' in the mail

We'll scatter out and find a hole they said
Cause Operation X is catchin' lead
I wheeled into a sideroad to the left
Drivin' to an almost certain death

I heard the steady screepin' of the shells
The burnin' powder sent a deadly smell
And it happened as I pulled into a stop
They hit us and I blacked out from the shock

Somehow I got back to the States alive
And now I got another rig to drive
My bumper sign says Operation X
It's there cause I'm the only one that's left

Operation X
It's there cause I'm the only one that's left
Yeah it's there cause I'm the only one that's left
Operation X
It's there cause I'm the only one that's left

D.J. Memphis Joe

Bobby Dyson - Lenny Groah - Lou Groah

© Shelby Singleton Music, BMI

with Ralph Emery

Headin' down to Memphis draggin' a heavy load
Cold night wind a blowin' on a long dark stretch of road
The night had been a long one the hours went goin' slow
Started gettin' sleepy so turned on my radio

(Hi welcome to the night show got a ton of records here to spin
If you're out there travelin' on the road oh be careful there my friends
Got news alive at 55 and understand the weatherman says snow
Till six a.m. just be my guest I'm DJ Memphis Joe)

Just rolled on through Brownsville my rig was runnin' fine
Heard Joe give a warnin' icy roads on down the line
Well I better gear her down now there's a bad kerb up ahead
And if by chance I hit that ice I might wind up dead

(Yeah you listen to the night show for all you truck drivin' men
I got a brand new record here called Diesel No 10
Now the snow's begun so on your run just take it kinda slow
And keep your dial set where it is to DJ Memphis Joe)

I can just see Memphis down in the morning light
Hear Joe signin' off now we made it through another night
But anytime I'm a travelin' down a long dark road
There'll be a station somewhere with a DJ named of Joe

I Got Lost

Tom T. Hall

© Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI

Well my eyes are open and my mind's awake
But from my neck on down I'm asleep
I been on this road for so doggone long
They might have to cut me outa this seat
Well my foot's a gettin' heavy and my head's a gettin' light
And my back it's beginnin' to hurt
If I don't get to wheelin' to a stop pretty soon
I'll be takin' buttons off of my shirt

I got lost or I could've made it right on time
I got lost in the arms of that baby of mine
It was three in the mornin' she was all alone
But don't you mention that to the boss
As far as he's concerned I made a little wrong turn
And from there on out I guess I got lost

I could stop and sleep but my freight won't keep
I got a deadline for makin' a call
I couldn't stay in bed I got an oversize head
And my hat's about a size too small
I got my jaker break off and my windshield smeared
I'm headin' south drivin' into the wind
The only thing that keeps me hangin' on to this job
Is thinkin' I'm a gonna get lost again

I got lost or I could've made it right on time...
[ guitar ]
Well my stick she's quiet and my rig rolls easy
Like it has for many years
Make it on long night on the little white lines
I gotta go on a hummin' in my ears
If the fux don't get me with that radar bit
I'll be steady creepin' up on the block
And when I'm gonna slow her down
I'll wheel it right into town
And have my buddy backin' into the dock

I got lost or I could've made it right on time...
I got lose oh yeah I got lost oh yeah I got lost

Wreck Of The Old Slow Binder

Mel Tillis - Fred Burch

© Cedarwood Publishing, BMI

Well they gave him his orders in Richmond Virginia
Sayin' Joe you're away behind time
Now this ain't no big roadranger but an old slow binder
You gotta put her into Memphis on time

He looked over to his ol' shotgun rider
Sayin' boy you better pray for your soul
For when we reach the top of old Mount Eagle
You can see this old binder roll

But it's a mighty rough road around Chattanooga
There's kerbs on a four mile grade
It was on that grade that Joe lost his average
You should see what a jump that he made

He was goin' down that road makin' ninety miles an hour
When the brakes on that old binder screamed
They were found in the wreck at the bottom of that mountain
Oh man what a terrible scene
[ guitar ]
Now all you ladies better take their warnin'
From now and this time on
Never speak harsh words to your truck drivin' baby
He may leave you and never come home

He was goin' down that road makin' ninety miles an hour...
He was goin' down that road makin' ninety miles an hour...

Jack Knife

Roy Baham

© Southern Arts Music, BMI

I left Seattle runnin' late
It was rainin' rainin' rainin' cats and dogs
The road was slick and full of little tricks
Like a walkin' on a slick hick'ry log
I had five axles in a white Mustang
Pullin' seventy thousands on behind
As I rolled her out of town to turn Fort Lynn around
I built a fire and let her unwind
Blindin' lights rainy night jack knife
[ guitar ]
Well I made that mountain well over the top
And I rolled down all the way
I went into a kerb that took a lotta nerve
As I left that mountain sway
As that tandem shuttered then settled down
I heard her airhold snap
There was no doubt I had to write it out
Or let her jack knife in my lap
Blindin' lights rainy night jack knife
[ guitar ]
There's a lot of operators who can tell you how
A runaway rig can kill
So I said me a prayer and then I hit the air
And let her jack knife off of that hill
Well I crawled out of a pile of junk
And walked away with a smile
I got out with my life
But a mean jack knife put me walkin' for a while
Blindin' lights rainy night jack knife jack knife

Sugarland U.S.A.

Jimmy Key

© Southern Arts Music, BMI

Drivin' back to sugerland USA
I been so lonesome ever since I went away
And this time I'm goin' back to stay
With my sugar in sugerland USA

I gotta keep the big wheels on the road
I can see sugerland down the road
And my sugar is waiting patiently
Right there in sugerland USA

Where sugar is sweeter and loving nights are longer
Sweet love never dies it just gets sweeter and stronger

Back home in sugerland USA
Where the living is easy ev'ryday
You can bet this time I'm gonna stay
With my sugar in sugerland USA

Where the sugar is sweeterand lovin' nights are longer...
Back home in sugerland USA...

Uh with my sugar in sugerland USA
With my sugar in sugerland USA

Truck Driver's Waltz

Tom T. Hall

© Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI

Well I have a few hours to wait
While they've loaded my trailer with freight
So I borrowed my buddy's old car
And drove down to the dancehall and bar

Although I just went there to watch
When I saw her my heart almost stopped
It was my girl in some stranger's arms
While the truck driver's waltz played on

So drive drive my blues away
And think of the love I have lost
Somewhere she's gay and the jukebox is playin'
The lonesome ole Truck Driver's Waltz
[ guitar ]
Now she doesn't know that I know
But wherever my old rig may go
I'll recall with each bridge that I cross
Her love and the Truck Driver's Waltz

So drive drive my blues away...
The lonesome ole Truck Driver's Waltz

Speed Traps Weight Stations And Detour Signs

Bob Tubert - Demetrius Tapp

© Shelby Singleton Music, BMI

Speed traps and weight stations and detour signs
Are standin' between me and that baby o'mine
Well I'm two ton over fifty miles on that stateline
Speed traps and weight stations and detour signs

I told that dock boss he was loadin' me too full
He told me you just drive it son don't worry what you have to pull
But that old dock boss don't have a baby like mine
And he don't have to worry bout crossin' that stateline

Speed traps and weight stations and detour signs...

There's a hard hearted lawman that's a waitin' just for me
With a fistful of tickets that I don't wanna see
So I gotta find a backroad for this old rig o'mine
Cause I'd rather see my baby than that old judge any time

Speed traps and weight stations and detour signs...
Yeah speed traps and weight stations and detour signs...
